Same GPU & CPU, different monitors

Pimpom

Forerunner
This comes from having to help someone choose a monitor but perhaps it has more to do with the associated GPU and CPU.

The friend is getting an RTX 4070, Ryzen 9 7900, 32GB RAM and a 27-inch monitor, mainly for video editing and playing MS Flight Simulator. In general, a higher resolution and higher refresh rate are desirable but budget is limited after the gfx card, CPU and the rest of the system.

A 1440p 100Hz monitor fits into the budget but what I'd like to know is how much it affects games, particularly fps, compared to a 1080p 75Hz display.

Based on simple arithmetic, a QHD display has 1.78 times the number of pixels on a FHD monitor, and 100Hz is 33% more demanding than 75Hz. Together that's 237% more work for the GPU and CPU. How does that affect game play? IF the relation were linear, the frame rate would drop by 2.37 times - e.g. from 150fps to 63fps. But I don't think it works out quite that way.

I don't play games myself so I need your help in estimating the penalty from playing with 1440p 100Hz compared to 1080p 75Hz, everything being equal.

1) There is no penalty from having a higher refresh rate monitor.
We can play at lower frame rates as much as the gpu/cpu allows. Higher refresh rates, if hardware can manage it, is much more responsive and visually smoother and very very useful in gaming. I think it should be 90+ minimum for any new monitor intended for gaming. Higher the better as it gives you future options and not all games will be very demanding. Make sure monitor supports freesync.

2) yes, 1440p is more demanding than 1080p. Its also better suited for a larger monitor and has adequate ppi for say a 27 inch monitor vs 1080p which is good till 21 or so.
So you can use larger monitors. 4070 is pretty good and is probably meant for 1440p gaming. No point in restricting it to 1080p.

3) We have very good 1440p 180Hz monitor from Acer and similar. at 15-20k. Strongly recommend that as minimum for gaming. Many people use/recommend the Acer XV272U KV one here. It has good colors, good refresh rate and ergonomics.
I have v2 of that monitor and its very good for the money. Latest is v3 which might be similar but with small stuff ( like USB ports i think) removed and made cheaper ( v2 was 22k). But look at the reviews for it and competetion yourself and make decision.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I knew that much. I included the refresh rate just to give an idea of what I was considering.

It will still be nice to know how it impacts frame rate. Not only for a buying decision but also as a piece of background knowledge.

I've heard good things about this monitor. I just don't know if we can still squeeze it into what's left of the budget.

This should give a good idea of the performance difference besides you can always use DLSS upscaling at 1440p as it looks pretty much as good as native 1440p and performs as good as at 1080p. I would recommend going with 1440p due to the much better sharpness as 1080p is pretty obsolete now especially for mid range. You check out the performance difference your self here.

Budget isn't strictly fixed but going for the Acer would push it up by about 3k over the BenQ GW2790Q I was considering.

@Kaching999 Thanks, that's very helpful.
Definitely worth it imo. Don't skimp on monitor if you have budget of 4070.

From first look, this monitor doesn't have freesync. That really makes a difference. Once you get used to it and then disable freesync, gameplay feels choppy.
Acer one is very colorful too + good ergonomics.
Also it frequently goes on sale. So you might get few thousands knocked off that way. Dunno if we have better models in that price range.

The Acer is a much better choice than the BenQ for just a tad more.

It dropped as low as 16K just last month. You may even get it cheaper after bank/card discounts.

mainly for video editing
For any desktop work, I would recommend getting a 4K screen. Text is just so much better at 150% scaling compared to 1440p at 100% scaling. You can always play at a lower resolution on a 4K monitor. Whereas getting text as sharp as 4K 27" at 150% scaling would be impossible with a 1440p 27" screen.

Nope. I looked there before. It's been "Currently unavailable" for some time now.

Ah, it's my location. I just checked with another browser without logging in. It's there for 17,349/-. No use for me.
Wait for a bit, it'll likely come back in stock. Keeps happening with this model.
