You cant change the MAC address of LAN cards. You can spoof them, but what's the point ?

I meant spoofing and there are lots of points to spoof if you are in a lan.

I think MAC address is used only for auth./logging purposes. Never heard of any MAC address based policies. If MAC address is changed (alongwith any other authenticable details) then probably you can trick the host. A would be B and vice versa.

Or simply put you change(swap) both the cards. Then also the MAC address changes but both would still be in the network.

I dont know from where you got piece of information but let me explain.
MAC stands for Media access Control. Its a 6 byte[48 bit] address that is hard coded into the network card.So just swapping cards from one computer to another just doesnt change the mac address.

MAC address are refered when packets need to traverse into a internal network or similarly when frames traverse out of the network.

Either you change the mac address by using a third party utility or do it manually through the settings for some cards. But its not advisable to do so.
I hope you get what I'm trying to say.

As far as the original query goes, afaik there would be conflicts arising. But dont take my word for it.Let me try this in my home lab & get back to you.

I don't know much about MAC address stuff. But won't changing the cards result in changed MAC addresses automatically? As it is the card that has the MAC address in it.

I believe you are confusing this.No offence mate but we are talking bout changing a hard coded mac address of a network card.

Correct. But wont both be still with "their" mac address when connected in the network? What are you achieving in the first place by doing that?
Where as the original author of the thread asked when both the network cards are with the "same" ac address. :)

OH that ways. Forgive my ignorance. I thought it was about swapping. Yeah I also thing that probably there would be a problem by having two same MAC addresses and Thanks Digen for pointing that out.
