Samsung has unveiled its new Exynos 5420 Octa processor today which offers eight cores and up to 20 percent better performance than previous Exynos 5410 processor.

Similar to the Exynos 5410 processor found on the Galaxy S4, the new Exynos 5420 comes with two quad-core CPUs. Four high performance Cortex A15 cores are clocked at 1.8GHz and four low power Cortex A7 cores are clocked at 1.3Ghz. It uses big.LITTLE processing implementation. The new chip is said to provide 20 percent better CPU processing capability over the previous chip by optimizing the design.

The new Exynos 5420 uses six-core Mali-T628 GPU which gives it twice the 3D graphics performance over its predecessor.

"Demand for richer graphic experiences is growing rapidly nowadays," said Taehoon Kim, vice president of System LSI marketing, Samsung Electronics. "In order to meet that demand from both OEMs and end users, we developed this processor which enables superb graphical performance without compromising power consumption."

The memory bandwidth of the new chip is also very impressive 14.9 giga bits per second using 933MHz dual-channel LPDDR3, which enables support for full HD Wi-Fi display.

The Exynos 5420 will begin mass production in August is likely to used in the upcoming Galaxy Note 3 which is expected make its debut in September.
