What happens when you take the Samsung made Google Galaxy Nexus, slightly bump up the internal specs (to make up slightly for the year's delay), double the price and bring it in plastic white over flowing with TouchWiz goodies? Well, you have the Samsung Galaxy Premier, Samsung's latest addition to their Galaxy line up of smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Premier

If you know the Google Galaxy Nexus by hardware and the Samsung Galaxy S3 by software, then you already know the Samsung Galaxy Premier. Think of it as an amalgam of the two, the meeting place of hardware and software into a new product and with a shiny new price tag. To clear it out further, have a look at the specifications of the Galaxy Premier smartphone.
Samsung Galaxy Premier full specifications

  • TI OMAP 4470 chipset
  • 1.5 GHz dual core ARM Cortex A9 CPU
  • PowerVR SGX544 GPU
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 4.65" HD (1280x720) Super AMOLED display
  • 8 MP rear camera, 1080p video @ 30fps
  • 1.9 MP front facing camera, 720p video calls
  • 8 / 16 GB internal storage
  • expandable memory via micro SD card slot
  • Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, WiFi, GPS
  • 2,100 mAh battery
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Chipset

As you can see the specifications line up nicely in comparison to the Google Galaxy Nexus. The Galaxy Premier sports a newer, updated TI OMAP chipset (4470 v/s 4460) which bumps up the CPU clock from 1.2 GHz to 1.5 GHz (slight boost in performance). The GPU is the PowerVR SGX544 which is half a notch above the PowerVR SGX540 found in the former smartphone. The Galaxy Premier packs the same 1 GB of RAM (sorry folks, no 2 GB!).

Camera & Display

In the multimedia department, the camera gets a boost up from 5 MP to 8 MP. A 1.9 MP front camera enables 720p HD video calling. The display remains the same Super AMOLED make at 4.65" and HD resolution.
Storage

Internal storage options come at 8 or 16 GB. Whats new is the micro SD card slot (life saver). This tiny little slot can make a lot of difference from a buyer's perspective. We are happy Samsung decided to include it in the Galaxy Premier.
Battery & OS

The battery is a 2,100 mAh unit, far bigger than the Galaxy Nexus. Expect more than a day's battery life out of this baby with relative ease. The phone will launch with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, skinned by Samsung's very own TouchWIZ UI. The Galaxy Nexus will only be receiving it's Android 4.2 update in a week or two.
Others

Samsung's smartphone will support and come with their latest and exclusive apps such as S Voice, S Beam, Smart Stay, Pop-up play etc.

Price

The biggest bummer with the Galaxy Premier is it's pricing, which is ridiculously high at $680. If you compare it to the recently launched Galaxy S3 Mini, it actually makes a lot more sense. But we never agreed to the Galaxy S3 mini's price tag as well (which really is nothing but a $200 worth device). Let's hope this device sees more sensible pricing, especially as Google has already shown the way with their LG Nexus 4 smartphone ($299 for 8 GB version).
