Samsung’s recently announced flagship smartphone Galaxy S 4 HSPA+ version costs $244 to make says market researcher IHS iSuppli. According to a press release issued by the firm, the LTE version with Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor costs $3 less ($241) than the HSPA+ version.
IHS iSuppli has released its preliminary investigation report, which suggests that Galaxy S4 smartphone carries a $236 bill of materials (BOM), up significantly from last year’s model – Galaxy S III.
“Although its hardware is not radically different from the Galaxy S III introduced in April of 2012, the Samsung Galaxy S4 includes some critical component updates that enhance its functionality as well as its BOM cost,†said Vincent Leung, senior analyst for cost benchmarking at IHS.
“Among the upgrades are a larger, full high-definition (HD) display; a beefed-up Samsung processor; and a wealth of new sensors that set a record high for the number of such devices in a smartphone design. And despite the larger display and other changes, the Galaxy S4 has roughly the same width and the same ease of handling as the Galaxy S III,†he added.
On the other hand, the LTE version of the Galaxy S4 packs an advanced mobile radio than the HSPA+ version; its total BOM cost is slightly lower, at $233.00.
IHS iSuppli also noted in its report that Samsung makes extensive use of its internally manufactured parts in Galaxy S 4, which should help the company in procuring the components despite the huge expected demand as well as keep the most of the component revenue inside the company itself.
Samsung Galaxy S IV is set to go on sale beginning April 26 in select countries, followed by broader availability in around 150 countries in early-May.
