A virtual teardown of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 by IHS iSuppli has estimated the bill of its materials to be $236, which is about $30 more than the estimated cost of its predecessor Galaxy S3.
“Although its hardware is not radically different from the Galaxy S III introduced in April of 2012, the Samsung Galaxy S4 includes some critical component updates that enhance its functionality as well as its BOM cost,” said Vincent Leung, senior analyst for cost benchmarking at IHS.
The display which has full HD resolution and AMOLED technology is one of the biggest upgrade in the new flagship and one of the major area of cost increase. It is estimated to carry a cost of $75.00, up from $65.00 for the S III.
The new Exynos 5 Octa processor uses custom eight core solution with four cortex A15 cores and four Cortex A7 cores. It is estimated to cost $30, up from $17.50 for the Galaxy S III's Exynos processor.
Apart from these, the new sensors included in the S 4 like IR sensor, humidity and temperature are estimated to cost total of $16, compared to $12.7 for the S3.
Although, the LTE version is expected to cost more , it costs slightly lesser at $241, because of the cheaper Snapdragon 600 processor. The 16GB HSPA+ version costs $244 to make.
The Galaxy S 4 is expected to be priced at $600-650 in retail.
