Google announced their revised Chromebook lineup, Google's Chrome OS powered laptops (that sell for prices near net tops itself). Enter Samsung Chromebook.

Samsung Chromebook

It's been a year since Google introduced Chromebooks, essentially laptops powered by Google's own cloud based Chrome OS (I/O 2011) and it can hardly be called a success. However, Google continues to push on this front with new models this year. Move away Acer AC700 and Samsung Series 5, the new Samsung Chromebook 550 is here.

Samsung Chromebook 550 Specifications:
  • 11.6" (1366x768) display
  • Samsung Exynos 5 Dual 5250
  • Dual Core ARM Cortex A15 based CPU
  • ARM Mali604T GPU
  • VGA Front Camera
  • 16 GB SSD (expandable via SD card slot)
  • dual band WiFi (802.11 a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 3.0
  • one USB 2.0 port, and one USB 3.0 port
  • 2.5 pounds (1.1 KG weight), 0.8" (20 mm) thick
  • 6.5 hours battery life
  • $249 price tag

Packing Google's very cloud-centric OS, Google also provides 100 GB of cloud storage free for 2 years. Internal SSD storage will hardly be enough, even for an average user. Thankfully you can pop in a cheap SD card and expand your storage by up to 64 GB.

The killer part of the deal is the price, which is just $249. When Samsung Series 5 Chromebooks were launched earlier this year, they were priced at $549. At that price it simply made more sense to go for a Windows powered laptop. That is not the case anymore. There is no official word on pricing and availability in India, but we do hope it makes it over seas. The expected price is about Rs. 15,000 which is a pretty decent deal.
