Graphic Cards Samsung Scales Up GDDR-3 Speeds

Samsung Electronics said Tuesday that it had begun production of its 1.6 Gbit/s GDDR-3 memory chip, also announcing that it has reached a speed of 2.0-Gbits in the lab.

Both of the new Samsung GDDR-3 chips are manufactured in 512-Mbit densities, which means that modules of up to 1 gigabyte can be manufactured by combining sixteen of the components together. The 1.6-Gbit GDDR-3 chip was developed in December 2004.

While GDDR-3 chips can be used in graphics cards, the technology will also be used inside the Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming console. GDDR-3 technology has already appeared in conjunction with the Nvidia 6800 Ultra series.
