Samsung has announced the start of mass production of next-gen PCI-e based Solid State Drives ( SSDs ) targeted for ultra-slim notebook PCs.
The new PCI-e SSDs will come in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities and will offer speeds much higher than SATA 6Gbps interface. The Samsung XP941 offers read performance of 1400MB/sec which is highest performance achievable with PCI-e 2.0 interface. This means up to 7 times faster speeds than hard disks and 2.5x faster than other SSDs.
This allows the drive to read 500GB of data or 100 HD movies as large as 5GB (gigabytes) in only six minutes, or 10 HD movies at 5GB in 36 seconds.
The new SSDs are incredibly small, coming in new M.2 form factor ( 80 x 22mm ) size and weight just six grams.
These new SDDs will be used by Apple in the upgraded Macbook Pro and Air lineup first, but soon we will see other notebooks coming out with these new SSDs.
