Samsung Electronics Monday hinted that its next target is Intel Corp., the world’s biggest semiconductor maker headquartered in the United States. That veiled bid was launched by Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor business president and CEO Hwang Chang-gyu during the company’s annual press conference at the Hotel Shilla.
‘â€We have our own plans for competition with Intel but we cannot reveal them in public, and you all are well aware that we are disinclined to talk about our projections on when we will emerge as the world’s biggest chipmaker,’’ Hwang said.
However, Hwang said the central processing unit (CPU) microprocessor market, roughly 85 percent of which is controlled by Intel, has already neared saturation point whereas flash memory segment _ Samsung’s specialty _ should sustain robust growth rates of over 70 percent in the coming decade as it has done in the past four years.â€
