Samsung is on track to release their next generation mobile SOC chipset based on the latest ARM big.LITTLE chip design. big.LITTLE essentially combines powerful cores with smaller, energy efficient ones for better battery life with the power packed performance whenever needed.

8 core big.LITTLE chipset

Samsung is working on their next generation chipset that will put 8 CPU cores on one die, which in turn will be placed into a smartphone or similar platforms. The 8 core processor consists of 4 ARM Cortex A15 cores (high performance) and 4 ARM Cortex A7 (high power efficiency) cores. The design that will make them work in tandem is ARM's big.LITTLE chip design.

big.LITTLE essentially enables the device to use the high performance cores when required, and step down to the low power cores for simple tasks as well as idling to save power and extend battery life. Whether all 8 cores will ever work simultaneously remains a mystery (like nVidia's 4+1 CPU strategy with it's Tegra 3 chipset).

The new chipset will be built on the 28 nm manufacturing process (most probably). The chipset is rumored to pack 2 MB of last level cache.
