Sapphire releases X550, faster X300
ATI HAS QUIETLY RELEASED its X550 cards and has been talking about them with its partners for some weeks now. It’s a new old card that is supposed to give ATI some boost in the highly profitable low end market. This card is meant to replace the well known X300 card clocked at 325 - 375 MHz core in some versions and 400 MHz or 500 MHz for memory. Those cards cost around €65 and it's quite confusing to pick one as you can get them in so many variations, 64 or 128 bit memory interface, and many different clock speeds.

The X550 cards now released by Sapphire and many others to follow is clocked at a 400MHz core and 500MHz memory. You will be able to get this card with 64 bit or 128 bit memory interface and this is something that will directly affect the final performance.

Sapphire will have 128 and 256 MB versions of the card and its sure that it can provide significant performance advantage against Nvidia 32 bit/64 bit 6200 TC cards. It manages to cool X550 passively and it comes with VGA out and Video out connector.

The card is already available in Austria for about €68, just €3 more than its older and slower X300 brother. Nvidia 6200 with 128 bit interface and 128 MB memory costs €85 - significantly more than the new ATI offering, but we still don’t know which the better performer is. This market is very important since this is the one that makes the revenues. Or bread and butter, as the Brits say. µ
