Storage Solutions Sata 2 querry!

hey guys i plan to buy a new HD I currently have a SATA 160 gb HD
will there be any compatibility problems if I add a new SATA 2 drive
my Mobo supports SATA 2

no problems. However the 3gbps depends on which motherboard/SATA controller. In case ur mobo supports 3 gbps, and one of your drives is sata 2 and one isn't you're still fine. They'll work, though at their maximum supported transfer rates.
 
Ya they'll still work fine..

I for one, have a SATAII drive on my RS482 mobo, which doesnt even support SATAII..But still, everything's fine.. :)
 
Yes, all SATA-II HardDisks are backward compatable, ie. will run on SATA-I interface.

But, some Brands/Models of HDD needs a 'JUMPER SETTINGS', but some are like AUTO.

Buy the HDD from a good-big shop and ask them to se the JUMPER if it has one.

Most SATA 2 hard disks have been set to run at 1.5gbps i.e SATA 1 setttings by default, to enable SATA 2 (3gbps) you need to use the Hitachi disk tool for the Hitachi hard disks, for Seagate's you need to remove the jumper....and no probs running SATA 2 disks on SATA 1 :)

i dont understand why the manufacturers by default limit to a lower speed which is designed to be run faster.

even my seagate hdd had the jumper. they put a very small jumper you wont notice it if u dont look carefully.
 
yes i agree with all no probs with u running ur SATA2 HDD, but i think i would be right if i say that the data transfer rate would be slow (u wud feel slow as well) if u r copyin from SATA2 to SATA1.........am i right guys??
 
not even if the rpm differs????also i had this softy which shows the data transfer rate of HDD, when i was transferring stuff from SATA2 to SATA1 i showed the writing/reading/buffering of SATA1 slower than SATA2 which i believe implies waht i said in my earlier post....slower data transfer rate
 
See.....PATA offers upto 133MB/s .....SATA I offers 150 MB/s .....SATA II offers 300MB/s but out average HDDs are capable of only 65MB/s on an average to it doesn't have any diff...but vendors make better quality SATA,SATA II drives than PATA thus read/write is more. :)
 
Well i have recently purchased a new WDC 160 gb sata Hdd.
but how to find wether it is sata1 or 2 & if it is sata 2 then like some one said we have to do some jumper settings to run it at sata 2 in segate drive wht to do in my drive.

Well just found out that my drive is sata 2,but now how to find wether it is running at sata1 or 2 & if on sata1 then how to change to sata 2.

Run HDTach ... if the Burst Speed is higher than 150mbps then it's running at SATA2 speeds else below 150mbps its running SATA1 :)
