Current SATA III standard provides transfer speeds up to 600MB/sec or 0.6GB/sec. A new standard called SATA Express has entered ratification process , The Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) announced today.

PCI Express technology enables transfer speeds upto 1GB/sec per lane which will be utilized in SATA Express specification to bring scalability to storage.

"SATA Express is a new specification under development by SATA-IO that combines SATA software infrastructure with the PCI Express® (PCIe®) interface to deliver high-speed storage solutions. SATA express enables the development of new devices that utilize the PCIe interface and maintain compatibility with existing SATA applications. The technology will provide a cost-effective means to increase device interface speeds to 8Gb/s and 16Gb/s."

Thus, SATA Express will eliminate interface bandwidth bottlenecks while using high speed solid state storage drives. The specification will define new SATA Express connectors and motherboard connectors that will support both new PCIe drives and existing SATA devices. Those devices which do not need such high speeds will continue to use existing SATA technology. The specification is expected to be completed by the end of 2013 and products can be expected to start using the new standard shortly thereafter.
