Hi guys recently my HDD had bad sectors due to which my HDD failed frequently.
So i connected my HDD to my friends pc and Formatted and partitioned the drive.
After that i used the CHKDSK utility to repair bad sectors .
Thank god it revived my HDD.
Now i didnt had any problem installing the os.

But i am not assured that my HDD is repaired .
Did that chkdsk took care of the bad sectors?
Are those replaced ?
So any tips to save my HDD from further issues.

@Nishu, bad sector can always be repaired (technically remap would sound better), but why to remap the bad sector, when you can get a new HDD for the faulty one.

To your question regarding more bad sectors, better scan your HDD using HD Tune :)

Actually my HDD is 5 years old. haha....

At present i am waiting for AMD BD's to upgrade my ancient PC.

Thanks CA50 i will try HD Tune.

Also i want to install linux on the same HDD.

Can i install it directly?

Or do i have to do some extra steps before installing linux on my pc?

Nope, no special steps required, you can install linux on any HDD, even a five year old one. However, it will most likely format the HDD to ext2/3. So you cannot use with windows directly.

Use a live CD first to try linux, then install it.

If you are not much interested in formatting and installing linux, you can install it inside windows itself and can have dual boot

Guys i am familiar with linux and how to install and dual boot it ...

I am sorry that i didnt make my point clear.

As i posted that i used chkdsk to get rid of bad sectors.

AFAIK chkdsk manipulates the bad sector so that Xp ignores that sector.

So does the same go for linux does it ignore the bad sector?

Thank you guys for the help

Just now my PC had shutdown suddenly and when i started it the xp loading page took like more than 1 min to get to welome screen.

And My PC is hell lot slow than before.

I dont know what actually happend.

Even i couldnt open browser or any app.

So i got into safe mode and posting this .

And also i tried to restore my PC to a check point but it failed.

"windows xp wdf01007",this was there in restore checkpoint but i dont remember that i did install that.

i confirm that there is no issue with disc.

I booted into win xp safe mode and there it was operating good no slow down at all.

And in xp(not safe mode) the cpu usage is >60%

My system got little bit speed boost when Avast update was completed.

but when i open apps the cpu usage is again >60% and the system struggles.

CPU usage is >60% the whole time even when doing nothing?

Check which processes are hogging the CPU.

Have you checked your PC for viruses?

Don't put many processes in startup, uncheck everything except your anti-virus from msconfig startup tab for faster boot, check the services as viralbug suggested.

ya i scanned my pc using avast internet security (updated ) and no virus.

Also i checked for any suspicious process in task manager and everything was good.

Only the system processes were running and were acting weirdly.

Usually the system processes didnt hog my pc as now.

explorer.exe,svchost.exe ,etc

Also the windows loading screen is slow it took more than 1 min to boot to welcome screen every time.

And also during startup only IDM,Avast,U torrent are present.
