About a min or two ago, i experienced voltage fluctuation in my house.

Heard a little bang and rushed to see if my LCD (which i had left on) was fine or not.

A couple of weeks back i had purchased a good quality spike guard extension cord and had installed it for my LCD + PS3 combo. I was relieved to find the spike guard had delivered by sending a kick back to the power outlet, switching it off. There was some smell of burning which made me worry still. LCD came back to life when i powered it on via same spike guard .Surprisingly PS3 did not came to life. Surprising cuz it was either off or at stand by mode. Wasnt playing it.

I have a power on/off switch installed right at the lead wire-ps3 power point connector but gen leave my ps3 on standby. IIRC, ps3 was again left on stand by mode.

Now when i powered it on, i cudnt get any LED glowing, and i was frantic for the next 5-7 minutes. Images of RMA procedure and my back up games going down the drain looming large.

I switced to diff socket on the spike guard, with no results.

After the concerning 7 mins or so, the red LED made an appearance much to my relief.

I checked by using for about 2-3 mins, PS3 was working fine.

Now:

1) Is everything really fine?

2) What was the smell for..? it had subsided considerably while i went to pull the mcb switch on which had tripped too. I cant really say but seems like smell was emanating from the spike guard.

All the sockets are functioning fine though.

3) Any precaution i need to take in the wake of this Godforsaken fluctuation i just went through ?

3. Use a UPS. A 1000VA APC should be fine. I have all the main devices (LCD, PS3, X360, DAC and the receiver connected to a 800VA APC and does its job fine).

Helps during such spikes.

Thanks for the qwik reply for (3) but as of now.. do i need to loose my sleep over anything regarding damages? (part (1) & (2) )

Everything seems to be working fine right now.

And the UPS primarily would be working as an enhanced spike guard only .. rite ?

Highly probable there was a minute plastic burn due to the spike inside the spike guard.

Yes, the UPS will work as spike guard too.

But how much Backup an ups (1000VA) can deliver?
Consider these devices are connected.
1. 40 LED (~110-150W)
2. DL RIG (Atom)
3. WD Player
4. Receiver 7.1 (Should I connect to UPS or directly)
5. Age old DVD player.

max 5 minutes is more than enough for me..

^5 minutes quite easily. I had the batteries of my 800VA APC replaced recently (almost a couple of months back) and I get a backup of close to 8 minutes with all the devices I had mentioned in my previous post. No problems of any overload indications here either.

Btw what make/model is that 7.1 receiver?
