Start with Live Cd's. You can install live CD to harddisk for eg one very easy good live Cd is:

PCLinuxOS

other famous live CD is Knoppix:

Rave the pro version from 2.5.1 captures in jpg/png/bmp format too. ;) Imo fraps is the best when it comes to capturing in game shots.

Fraps is the best, captures in lossless bitmaps giving you the highest quality output always.
And you can always compress them down to any quality level in acdsee or similar software.

Hmm.. You can use IrfanView for that .. Just open IrfanView and press C .. Set the capture options .. You can capture by a hot key ..or on a timely basis and have those files saved automatically in a folder .. IrfanView is freeware and IMHO its better then others ..

trial version dosent help, even the original version has some stupid problem, it just dosent open, i get the small icon in the task bar and when ever i move my curson over it, it dissappears, the same copy works well on some other computer :S
and yes, the trial version works without a hitch, only that there is no option to capture in jpg format :(
