Yeah.... the SE Xperia, that many of us were waiting for... was officially launched in Delhi today by SE.....

Its a wonderful device.... and its wonderfully idiotically priced at Rs 44,500...

Btw.. it comes with a 4GB card and no TV-out cable will be provided.....

SE - just got overconfident !!

OOps, 44.5k!!! Sony seems to have gone mad!!

Even Samsung Innov8 retails for 38k now.

~30k for Xperia would have been ideal.

FORTY F**KING FOUR THOUSANDS!!! Wow...

... this is going to make iPhone look like lucrative offer... lol!!

Especially someone doing IC in market section for imported iPhones under 30k.

Yes, someone had to mention iPhone in this thread... so I did it. :bleh:

Are these guys trying to create a false illusion in the market about their products? A super high price, much higher than what Nokia has, must mean a better product.
Dunno who decides the prices for SE n Samn..

Knowing SE, the prices should quickly get down to sub 30k once the crazy people are all done buying their X1's for 45k. :P

Heck my P910i was selling for 39k on launch before it quickly got down to 25k. The same happened with P990i too.

The only thing this time around that I am half afraid would prevent quick price drops is the bad pricing trend set in India by Apple. Since Apple put a ridiculous price tag their iPhone in India, every mobile company who has a similar or better spec'ed phone wants to put even more ridiculous price tags on their phones. Earlier there were hardly a few phones that had 30k+ price tags in India and even so, most quickly saw price drops that bring them below 30k or quickly disappear from the market entirely. This time around Apple is is in the market and it seems it does not want to reduce prices anytime soon. So, its quite possible that until iPhone prices decrease, these other phones would also not see good price drops. Good for the companies, but bad for the consumers I would say.

Why is the 45K price surprising though? It costs about ~USD 899 in America, SD 1300 In Singapore. So.. i dont know, i think the indian price is inline with international rates. Its got nothing to do with Apple "setting the standards" or any of that?

Or am i mistaken here?
Edit :-

As for price drops, according to what i think (feel free to correct me), any phone which is tied to an operator, will NEVER (lol, depends on several factors) decrease the price. As for phones which have no "locked-in" prices fall ... Example :-
HTC Diamond ... Im still looking at the price hovering (FIXED) at 24K (6 months since launch) (tied to Airtel).
So my theory is that for phones which are tied to an operator, the prices dont actually come down, but for unlocked phones, prices tend to flacuate. And most phones (hi-end) that i have compared, fall in line with international prices. Its all speculation though ~ ~

IMO this should not be compared to the iphone wotsoever, this is a complete PDA whereas iphone is alas the iphone! rock, paper, scissors innit?

and also i think its just an inflated deal to sell it off around christmas/thanksgiving ...expect stabilization in arnd 6 months

Its not a surprising price tag for SE's high end phone as Sony had similar prices for its high end phones in the past on launch dates which quickly dropped to more acceptable levels. But even brands like Samsung and some other which seemed to have good pricing for its phones in the past seems to have coming up with pretty heavy price points these days.

Remember, none of these phones really cost anywhere close to their present price points even if you include the R&D and other costs. So whats driving these companies to attach crazy price tags with not just local, but even in international markets. I think its because someone has been successful in selling phones consistently at such price points and if you have a similar or better spec'ed product on your hands, then you should also be able to sell it at similar or higher prices unless you have done something really wrong.

"someone has been successful in selling phones consistently at such price points"

Who?

AFAIK Nokia E90 has had some good success owing to its Communicator Fan Base, Omnia isnt a success story, Moto isnt exactly high end and no one wud drown 40k on a LG.

My point is Why spoil a potential market, i still think this is just a pre season gimmick, nobody in it's right mind is going to buy the Xperia for 44k, id better wait and watch the competetion tighten.

P.S-SE wont risk loosing to Nokia just because of Price Point, be sane and just observe!

Yep agreee to that 100%. I understand the logic to which you are pointing out. But consider this, the price of a phone, or the trend, has always been this way. or atleast the "launch-a-new-phone-with-high-priec-tag" concept. Nokia 8850 , 8210 they all have had the same trend, its always been there, nothing has changed what so ever. Last time it was about how slim they could get, next was camera and additional features , so on and so forth. The "x-factor" is evolving, but pricing being defined in correlation to the x-factor has always been the same.

(Yes im sorry, yet another correct me if im wrong statement, and dont flame) THe current X-Factor is undeniably the "Iphone" its in quote because its no more a product, its more of a "definition" on its own. So come up with better features / looks / whatever crap then IT, that gets you a higher price tag.

Sorry for the long winded post, but inmho this is what my analysis pointed at ~ ~

Edit :
Nemesis we are just going to go around in circles, talking the same point using different words =P But i do hope you got what my point is about, High Price New launch tag for a phone is always there, but what defines that high price is what changes, no surprise to that. So in conclusion, everything that gets released (STRICTLY IN AN INTERNATIONAL MARKET) will be compared to the Iphone (atleast currently), and this is where i agree to what you are/were/going to say/ing/id.

Saw the XPeria today on CellGuru. Seemed sturdy and the panels looked really nice. Hoping for the price to decrease drastically otherwise ill buy the 5800.

As usual with SE pricing. Lucrative.. It'd come down shortly..

P1i was launched in July-07, more than a year back, wait to come down in similar factor by end of 2009 :)

But it fell by 10k in the first 2~3 months. The decrease after that point was less substantial. Lets just hope the same happens with X1. :)

wow... those are some ridiculous prices.. well atleast its a sign of things to come.. but then again.. aint everything ridiculously priced when launched.. i guess one should give it atleast 2-3 months to get to a stable price.. well thats wt i hope...
