i got my 500 Rma'ed a while back .. its till giving me issues :( ... i dunno why the heck the failure rate has gone up so much with seagate :@

sTALKEr said:
sorry for OT, but why exactly would you wanna do this?

i was in accel the other day and there were 22 people .. who needed replacements.. all of them had either a 7200.11 or 7200.9

im not sure if its the firmware.. but they are failing..Hopefully the Firmware upgrade solves the issue

I've been having some weird problems with my 120GB 7200.9 also. It started when the OS wouldn't completely load. The splash screen loads, then the monitor goes into standby and the computer seems to hand. I couldn't even F2 to try safe mode. I haven't installed any new hardware, drivers, etc.

This has never happened to me before, this computer or otherwise. I was, and am, confused but I suspected the drive was dead. Strangely enough, putting the drive in the freezer allowed me to re-boot and get into safe mode, where I promptly grabbed everything I needed in order to try to format and reinstall the OS.

Now, the drive has been running in safe mode for 5+ hours, no problems yet, and I'm even more confused. This is the second time I have removed the drive, left it in the freezer overnight, and gotten into safe mode to retrieve data. After the first time I froze the HDD, I scheduled a drive check upon boot and the check completed with nothing out of the ordinary. Immediately after the check completed, the drive did the same thing it did before: monitor goes off like the computer went into standby, and no chance to F2.

Is this a BIOS failure, a F/W issue, or something else? Can I rule out Mechanical failure? Somebody give me a hand, please.

EDIT: The drive will enter Last Known Good Configuration, after being frozen for 4 hours, and passes all seagate "seatools". Windows error check shows pass also. Does anyone have an idea of what is wrong?
