If the HDD serial number starts with 3, its made in singapore, if it starts with 5, its made in china.

Check this.... 3 seems to be the form factor....

^^ And the capacity part in the model no. isn't correct. e.g., mine is st3320620as. Where 320 is the capacity, 6 is for 16mb cache, and 20 I've no idea about :P

The 8mb version would be st3320820as.

^^ Seems they haven't updated that page in a long time :P

BTW, techhead was saying that you can make out from the serial no. if the disk is shortstroked or not. ( 'shortstroked' - is this the correct word? )

^^ Yes, that seems to be it. Except for the 400 giggers; st3400620as and st3400820as - they both have 3 platters :P Weird, ehh?

^^^ I caught the 400GB difference too :) Possibly they changed the specs for the HDD but not the model number OR a simple good ol' misprint

EDIT: The new 160GB Seagate 7200.9 single platter is named ....ST3160811AS .... so the 1 platter shows up as "1" ... but now they have a 1 in the end ... so I looked around what is this 1 which replaces the 0 and it is the darned Height of the HDD. The last number 0 is for normal height of the HDD and the 1 indicates super slim ..... Q.E.D.

Here is a pdf file from Seagate on the 7200.10 series HDDs ... 1.6mb download....

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/manuals/sata/100402371a.pdf

To my limited knowledge of Seagate drives I translate the details of their HDD like so....

st3320620as

st=Seagate Technology .... 3=form factor 3.5" .... 320=size in GB .... 6=16mb cache .... 2=number of platters .... 0=dunno .... a=PATA/as=SATA

Eazy > i saw everything. but 16 mb singapore is not available in india, my super disti told tht and chaos told tht too.
actually theres not anything the superdisti cant bring hes the super disti of more than 15 companies.
I guess i'm goin to buy the 8 mb one in friday:).

so the million dollar question why singapore is not shipping drives with the 16 mb one, or thereare some very hard to find anyone in TE got tht? tough performance diff is zero."incase of 7200.9 it was not .0"

Is the Seagate Disti eSYS ? If not then phone eSYS in Delhi on phone number 41811694 and check. You can also phone Seagate on their toll free number 1600 33 11 04

I went thru the HDTach thread for benchies of people with the 8mb and 16mb cache 7200.10 HDDs and the results are nearly the same. FYI - Chaos and Apollyon are 8mb cache drive users.

Eazy i know Chaos has 8 mb.

1> I know chaos has 8 mb, and he said 16 mb is not available in india "singapore made", my disty said the same thing too.
2> I called up Prime, Mr gulbir transferred the phone to Miss Meena , she confirmed me no 16mb Singapore made available she has 8 mb ones.
3> Esys in delhi is always busy "number busy" . No my disty is not esys.
4> People says Singapore ones are reliable than china, that lefts me to 8 mb? one i guess even chaos told me his 8 mb performing better than 16.

Last option i guess i'm picking up the 8 mb.

Appo, he has this fetish for made in singapore 16mb drives :P The ones available here are made in china (or taiwan or malaysia....I don't know or care :P)

I bought my 320 gig here:

COMPUTERS INFINITE 207, 58 SAHYOG BUILDING NEHRU PLACE NEW DELHI-110019 PHONE - 11 26444352 CONTACT PERSON : Mr. Gagan

Its 16MB and made in Singapore.

From my observation, the serial numbers starting with 3 are made in singapore. The serial number of my hard drive starts with 3 and it states made in singapore. Maybe the other members can share their views .....
