Seagate Evaluates Opening R&D Facility in India
India has become one of the most prominent places for foreign investments, especially in IT and recently we have been hearing a great deal of new openings in the country. This week, Seagate announced that it is now considering opening a new facility in Bangalore, India. During a press conference, Seagate's country manager Rajesh Khurana said that while the company is evaluating options for a research and design facility in India, he would not disclose what factors that Seagate is considering.
Earlier this year Seagate acquired Maxtor, and while many expected Seagate to incorporate many of Maxtor's products and services into its own lineup, Seagate announced that it would be halving Maxtor's employees. Up to 13,500 employees will be let go from Maxtor while Seagate is looking to fill its Singapore office with an extra 2000.
"Seagate is addressing a growing desire for people to easily manage, share and enjoy their digital content, regardless of media type, from anywhere at any time using a web browser. Increasingly, consumers want to easily transform their scattered photos, video and music files into organized, richer multimedia compositions that are personalized for selected groups of people or posted to public sites. The multimedia experience that our new Maxtor Fusion solution brings to consumers represents an important next step in the digital home transformation that's taking place today," said Jim Druckrey, Seagate's vice president and general manager.
So far this year, Seagate is making some very bold decisions the company has been doing fairly well. Seagate has been releasing new products for both the mobile space as well as the more demanding enterprise sector such as its new 300GB Cheetah 15K.5. The company said that although we will be seeing less from the Maxtor brand, it plans to keep Maxtor's services for the long haul.
