I have a 2TB GoFlex Home network drive. We have 2 laptops and 2 desktops in the house. All of them have their individual Time Machine back up drives [3 are older drives that I had lying around, and one is a new 1TB drive that I have partitioned into 300gb/700gb for TM/Data].

So I will be using the network drive pretty infrequently.

Question is, if I use it say once a week, should I leave it on 24/7 or switch off when not in use. Some sites say there is less wear and tear if I leave it on but if it stops spinning when not in use is there any difference at all?

Or any other suggestions? Now also thinking if I really need the network drive at all. Maybe sell the network drive and just have individual back ups for each machine?

well.. all my knowledge and logic till date says that leaving the HDD switched off when not in use is a wiser option. I have never heard benefitting the HDD by keeping it switched on all the time.. is there any particular reason or explanation given on the websites where its suggested to keep the HDD switched on for less wear and tear??? if so, then please share here so we all may apply our logic and understanding to come to a conclusion.

Some sites say that a constantly spinning HDD will have lower failure rates than one which is made to start and stop often.

Maybe true, but to my mind it should not apply here as network drives are anyway meant to stop spinning when not used for certain time right?

Haev no clue if even the first statement is correct or not, but have definitely read it some places.

maybe.. maybe not.. i just hope these kind of advices are not being passed online so that actually the hard drives wear off faster and boost sales..this kind of idea is pretty far fetched.. i know i am thinking too much.. but even then.. .........

If You are going to access the Network Drive daily then leave it on, if not, its safe to turn off & on when you need it... As much as the hipe over the internet that Hard drives fails a lot, I have only had 1 hard drive fail on me in the last 8 years i've been using a computer (Without any User Error), I am not saying i haven't dropped a few

Sorry to hijack this thread, can anyone tell me what happens to the drive if power goes out, i.e. any data loss? or how to turn off the GoFlex Network, have one lying around and thinking of using it!
