I purchased new 500GB seagate laptop hdd ST9500325AS( momentus 5400.6).

After installing the hdd in XPS 1330 laptop, i tested it for few hours but clicking noise did not disappeared. So i told my dealer about it and dealer replaced it with new HDD. But problem remains the same clicking noise still comes from even from replaced HDD.

I do not know what to do now? Any firmware upgrade will solve the problem??

Please suggest me the solution.

I have a 2.5" 20gb external Seagate HDD which clicks constantly when connected to any USB port on the MoBo but works fine if I connect it to a USB port on my Viewsonic 2245 monitor's built in powered hub. STRANGE !! :S

That happens when your HDD doesn't get enough power to drive the motor.

Same thing used to happen to me as well and then i finally got around to checking the current and voltage. Found out my USB port wasn't providing enough voltage. :(

1. Almost all HDDs will make SOME noise. Some models more than others :) What you are hearing is probably just the seek noise made by teh HDD when reading data, especially since its continous across 2 HDDs.

2. If you want to be sure, run a HDTune scan on the HDD. So long as no issues are reported, you are fine.

This is probably NOT a firmware thing here.

seeking noise is quite different from the clicking noise.

clicking noise is more like that head is trying to move from rest and then suddenly stops and keeps on going through this iteration.

seeking noise is like one vrrrrooooooom and then we are ready to roll :P

Edit : just realized how non-techie the above written content is.. but just wanted to let the Thread opener know the difference :)

+1.

Had the same prob with a 120gigger in a casing. One port, clicks and no detect. plug in 2 ports, all is fine.

The problem is your laptop is not able to supply enough juice for the hard disk to run normally. thats why the clicking noise

It is not external HDD its internal hdd. I am not using it via usb. It is connected inside the laptop

ok did you read the 2nd line in my post? It does not matter if its USB or internal.

Maybe the DC to DC convertor in the lappy was not built for that much power. newer driver do consume more power than older models.
