hey guys,

Bought a ST2000DL003 from prime on 25th of june. Since then all was smooth for almost a month and half, then had a problem. Was getting a "beeping" sound from my HDD when i was trying to access certain files on the HDD. Now, at first thought it was the system speaker, but even after removing it, was getting the sound. S.M.A.R.T. says 'All izz well'.

Anyways have recorded the audio and posted link below.

Wanted to RMA my drive ASAP, but since had no cash to get new drive to backup, RMA was not possible + then sold off my old rig, and as of last week got my self a new rig and another ST2000DL003. Also had spoken to Seagate (Singapore) last month, said that i should RMA my drive asap, and also there are no speakers inside HDD's, but well for reasons above could not do it immediately.

Anyways, now i have recovered almost all of my data from the old drive, except for maybe one TV series(backup of which is going on). Can anyone tell what the problem might be?

Also, when the HDD is "beeping", the data transfer speeds drops to almost 1~2MBps from 80~100MBps.

Will be giving the drive for RMA on monday as finished backup today only.

@OP, the sound might be because of some inside mechanical issue. Its good that you have opt for RMA

Yeah planned to go on monday, but went today only. Was going to go yesterday, but came to know of the procedure of filling details online. Making it compulsory is stupidity!. Also their form system sucks, as i found out too soon:@. It took 30 minutes to make an account with details! :@

Anyways, finally went today to Accel and gave the HDD. First had trouble reaching the destination! Then the idiots there did not even want to find out what was wrong with the HDD:no:. Last time when i had spoken to Seagate, they wanted me to RMA the HDD asap as they wanted to know about the issue with the HDD, as they had not encountered this problem at all. Seems like Seagate ought to get rid of accel. Accel told me they will take 10 days to give new HDD, 3 days to check the HDD, and remaining for finding a spare, maybe? Idiots! :@

Anyways, am going to write to Seagate to tell them about the shit service provided.

But this is nothing, LOL. Had given my Samsung i200 last month for RMA. GOt it back last week. The idiots have flashed "Orange" firmware on it which does not detect my Docomo card! HA. And the mic is still not fixed! Am going to give samsung too a piece of my mind! :@ :@ :@

Accel is crap & that's a universal truth...

About the HDD I think the problem maybe 'coz of HDD getting less power.. I have same model HDD 2x & when I use them on my HDD dock whose power button is giving me slimier problem with these HDD's.. When i press the button to mount the HDD the malfunction in the button disconnects the power & then again starts supplying it a few times... Happens only sometimes if I am not pressing the power button with enough pressure mostly while while dismounting... Same sound is given by the HDD's ...

So I presume in your case the HDD was not getting enough power while read/write & was making the noise...

Think its true, have now switched SMPS to a 600W, will be going for a Seasonic/VX450/550 + cabby upgrade in the near foreseeable future.
