I managed to get a result finally, after two days of only the errors.

Hope it's a slightly permanent fix.

What was the cause/cure? Is there something we need to do to help (my constant pressing of F5 wouldn't have helped it, for sure)?

The problem mostly seems solved. Only faced this issue once in 3-4 days though I haven't been browsing at my usual rate.

The error seems to crop up much less frequently though. All the best!

I face this problem several times a day. No, I am not exaggerating. Since I am in a different timezone, when most of TE's members would be offline, this might explain why I see it and you don't. It would also mean that guests/spiders visiting the site visit during the Indian night.
