Linux Selectively mute applications in Ubuntu

As the title suggests, I want to be able to mute applications selectively in Ubuntu. Similar to the feature in Windows 7. How can I do that? Googling brought up pulseaudio. Is that the right solution? Please help. Browsing and listening to music simultaneously is a problem due to this :(

I use KDE.

^ I read pulseaudio doesn't work in KDE. Is that the case? I just gave the command pulseaudio from the konsole, nothing happened. What exactly do I need to do?
