Sending a laptop to India from US

And its a heavy and expensive laptop (Asus G72, weighs something like 10 pounds), I bought it for $999 from Best Buy 2 years ago and now want to send it to a family member to India (Hoshiarpur, Punjab but I can send it to a big city like Chandigarh and have it picked up there). And no I know nobody traveling to India.

I guess Fedex or DHL are my options? What kind of shipping/customs hassles am I looking at? Anybody have any experience with this?

Use ICC World PPO service. Rates are way cheaper than DHL/Fedex. They will handle the Customs clearance for you too.

FedEx & DHL will screw you in shipping and your relative with custom charges. Shipments which otherwise do not attract customs (business samples, very low value items) still attract considerable customs charges when shipped through these shippers. Your bets bet would be to find a secondary shipper in India who can handle customs for you. In Delhi I use United Couriers United Worldwide Couriers. They handle everything from the pickup to delivery for very reasonable charges.
