Won't the product key be located on a sticker somewhere...underside of a laptop, desktop cabinet e.g.
I think it is unlikely that the product key will be printed on the Desktop or Laptop itself...
And the serial will be that of the OEM version... It may not work with a normal disk...

@OP Call Customer Care and ask them if you can get a copy of the disk. And search among your friends and colleagues, someone may have the same product or atleast similar product from the same manufacturer... Borrow that...

what's not booting up? recovery disk or OS installed on machine? If OS is booting then you can use "Magic Jellybean keyfinder" to get your cd key.

The OS installed in the machine(HP Pavillion) was Windows Vista Home Premium , and it has a recovery partion on my HDD, i upgraded the OS to Windows 7 Ultimate by using a MSDN key and made a recovery disk using the Recovery Disk creator software , but now the problem is tht when i try to restore my OS using the disk , i am getting Windows Vista OS only instead of Windows 7 :-o , i think the system is recovering from the HDD recovery partition instead from disk... so what i am trying to do is freshly install windows 7 with the same key , but since i made the recovery disk, i dint note down the serial :-(

Isn't the key is written on sticker back side of your laptop? Look at the back side of laptop...there would be an OS sticker...the serial number would be printed there...

i think he wants to recover the msdn key and not the vista key for his original windows vista which he got preinstalled on the system...

Dude have a word with the MSDN guys.
Shoot off an email to them.

I am sure they would be more than happy to give you the same key again. ( Why not...You have paid for it ...)
PS : Dont you have the key on your mail
