Hey TE member,

I wanted to get a server or anything that can act like it, but the problem is that, if I go for orthodox Dell, IBM or anyother server they come with added features that I am going to use hardly and they charge for it heavily.

Can we assemble it like normal desktop? if so can u suggest the configuration.

(Raid is main priority) This server will have static ip and will be accessed from outside and would used for development 24x7.

(Not Needed -- cloud computing, virtualization)

or

should I for branded server.

Is reliability of your server important?

Ideally, you need:

1. Redundant PSU

2. Hardware RAID controller card

Both are not easily available as third party components in India.

If you are only accessing the server remotely, why not rent a server like Amazon's EC2?

Check if you can go for a Workstation machine instead of a rack mounted server.

The difference between both of those are a workstation can be used in a SoHo kind of environment as a server. Rack mounted servers have all the different features typically used in corporate / hosting kind of environments.

Workstations have powerful configs and yes they have RAID too. You can check around for configs.

Oh and yes, I forgot, the main difference between both are.. Workstations stand vertically upright whereas rack mounted servers are flat and horizontal.

tys djmkey!, u made confusion clear ya workstation is a better option then, if it supports raid. Can anyone prescribe any configuration or shld i go for branded ones??

Servers dont have to be rackmount only , there are 3 kinds of chassis 1)tower servers (entry level) 2) Rack server (Mid to High level) 3) Blades (High level)

for tower based servers look here : http://www.dell.com/in/enterprise/p/poweredge-tower-servers

check our website mentioned in my signature. We deal in servers for many corporate clients. Hopefully, you will get what you want at our site

you can buy Intel workstation boards from open market and assemble one. go to intel website and select Xeon compatible motherboards available in your price range. I think you will find Intel S series m/b.s

#Amax You did not mention what all will be installed on the server. You just mentioned development which can range for many things.

Sorry for that, djmkey!

Actually the server is meant to be used for Java Development. So all the related frameworks, and JBoss will be intalled. And yes it be Ubuntu Server. I don't know about what lie ahead in future requirement but right now thats what we are planning it for.

Hey, first of all no need to be sorry.. it happens; we are all humans

Secondly, we have a project at office that has Java based apps and yes it requires quite some memory. Since you guys are the developers, then you might be knowing how much of RAM you would require. You can decide accordingly. Get anything above 4 GB tho just to be safe. For the processor you can go with Core i series too if Xeon's seem too costly. IMO Java requires more RAM than the CPU. Unless you have any other CPU intensive apps, Core i series should be good. For RAID you will have to check the configs of the machine to see which one suits you the most. For more on RAID look here You will also have to consider the cost of the disks in this.

Also look out for something that has a longer warranty period. Warranty on Workstations or Tower servers are not cheap when it comes to replacement parts.

Any particular reason for going with RAID ? what kind of disks are you planning for ? Do you have any IOPs figure to be met ?
