hey ppl,

i've been thinking of setting up a wireless network for my home, since i'll be gettin a lappy and might wanna connect my XBOX too..
also, i've been thinking of moving away from my SIFY conn to a dataone or the tata indicom 2Mbps connection..

Now from wat i've read so far:
1. I wud need a wireless ADSL modem cum router
2. Wireless card for my PC

I'll be connecting a maximum of 3 PC/lappys at any given time. The maximum radius required would not be more 15-20 m. the network is for a 3-bedroom flat with an open terrace.

I have a few queries regarding the whole setup.
1. First up, does it make any sense in getting the Draft N routers or shud i stick with 802.11g standard devies?? from the perspective of a home setup.
2. I've read a lot about the LINKSYS WRT54GL modem cum router. Is this the best i can get here or shud i look at other options. D-LINK, BUFFALO..??
3. may sound like a noob here, but wud a wireless setup affect online gaming in any manner..?
4. is there a difference in speeds between a wireless PCI adapter and a USB adapter (for the PC)?? wat wud u guys suggest . .

I get 6 mbs download rate which is pretty damn fast, I just bought a Buffalo router that has a max data rate of up to 125Mbps. Chances that you are going to have a faster connection than this (125mbs), are unlikely, and range is good. So probably not necessary to have draft N. Yes it would affect online gaming, but I am not sure, but I think you would still have some lag due to ISP speed rather than wireless router, if your ISP was faster you would have more lag from router.

If you want to paly a lot of online games, or networked games, you are better sticking to wired.

Not sure about #4, but I would think USB, anyway... USB can be unplugged and used on any pc easily.

Even if you go for a/b standard also will be just fine for internet usage. But to get better LAN speed as mentioned above get a g router. USB/PCI is your choice but if you are going to have adapther for each client then I suggest go for PCI, they come with antena which should help in reception.

some time matching pair of router and PCI card can give you better performance (like d-link have some turbo function which works only when both device is d-link).

you router speed will never be a problem compare to ISP speed at least next 5yrs in India :)

thanks for the responses guys :)

any particular suggestions on the router??

also will the g standard be good enough for say 20 m radius in a flat..?

Wireless PCI adapters are fast and more stable than USB adapters. Also cheap.
For gaming however, stay wired.

1. IMO wireless draft N devices, although released, will take some time to get popular in india.. and maybe some more to come into homes.. so you would be well off sticking to a b/g device rite now (unless cost is not a factor that is..)

2. The WRT54G that u mentioned is a broadband router cum 4-port switch.. It would do if u are using a separate adsl modem for ur ISP and only want to use the Linksys device as a WiFi AP.. If u want to totally do away with ur ISP's modem you could look at an all-in-one device such as the Netgear DG834G - its a adsl2+ modem, wireless router, 4-port ethernet switch in one.. And its selling for arnd 3400 INR now... I've been using it at home for quite some time now, keep it on 24/7 without a break and its given me no problems.. Although it only has a single antenna the coverage is good enough for within a single home.. I've got it at the center of my home, and it gives me a signal even when i'm standing on the road outside my home (a very weak one though) ..

3. Online gaming wouldn't be affected by the router itself unless ur internet connection is of speeds above 30-40Mbps (;) can only dream of that in India for a long time).. What WILL be affected is file sharing over LAN.. Whereas a wired network would give u speeds of 100Mbps (and even 1Gbps if u've got the hardware) a wireless one will be limited to 54Mbps, that too not constant coz of interference and distance..

4. A PCI card would be better i guess rather than a USB adapter if ur gonna keep the card permanently in the PC and don't wanna switch it around.. I've experience better performance with a PCI rather than a USB one.. Again, thats my opinion but its up to you..

thanks for the detailed explanation niks :)

but i thot that the WRT54G was an ADSL modem cum router..!! i wud prefer doing away with the modem from the ISP and stick to a single device..any other suggestions, for a better product...i can extend my budget for a good product..

I would stay you stick to Linksys or Netgear .. Stay away frm D-Link if ur planning to keep the device on 24/7 without a break.. I have had my experiences with D-Link...:@

For Netgear i've mentioned the soln above (DG834G)

For Linksys there is WAG200G

Dunno abt Buffalo but Linksys & Netgear r the tried n tested ones...

I havent read about ur setup

But Regarding Wifi Access Point , nothing beats Buffalo WHR G54S its the best no competition at all.

And costs 2300Rs , also it can be flashed with 2 gr8 3rd party firmwares DDWRT , Tomato , Open WRT opening new possibilities and unlocking new settings absent in the default buffalo firmware. Tomato Rocks especially and is stable.

Have done a lot of reading abt Wifi AP's on Indian and International Forums and asked a lot of Wifi Experts there

and have come to a conclusion abt Buffalo WHR G54S.

I know ppl who have sold there Linksys and got the Buffalo.

Lol i am not advertising Buffalo but they rock for sure. :)

time to re-open this topic..

TATA broadband ppl confirmed that my area is not feasible for them..hence i have decided to apply for BSNL tomm..

now that thats decided, i need to know which ADSL2+ modem cum router is better..:

Buffalo WBMR G54

or the LINKSYS WAG200G

I have kinda decided not to opt for the netgear and D-link products, cos of mixed reviews..

couple of other questions as well..:

Like Quad mentioned abt the Buffalo router, i've read raving reviews abt it..does it make any sense to buy a modem from BSNL and just the Buffalo router..or wud the buffalo router be good enough..?

are the linksys and buffalo models mentioned above, flashable with tomato or DDWRT firmwares..?

thanks guys

My advice:

For being happy and content user:

1. Get a modem that works well with ADSL2+, provided Ethernet connection.

2. Get a wireless router that can be flashed with tomato/dd-wrt/openwrt. Dont go for the one that can't be flashed.

3. Connect them together. :D

@linux..

thats what i plan to do if the above mentioned modem cum routers are not flashable..

any idea if they can be flashed with tomato or DDWRT firmware guys..?
