As the title suggests i am facing severe overheating problems with my c2d e7400 which is about 2 year old now,but this problem has sprouted very recently ,only 2 days before to be exact.i am using the stock intel hsf provided with the processor. No thermal paste has been applied(i am kind of a noob when it comes to thermal pastes, are they compulsory or something,or am i lacking an important thing here?).i am facing pretty extreme temps,on stock my proccy runs about 50-60C and on load(prepare to be blown away) a full 100C,yes you read right.this is according to HWmonitor and the Bios.almost any game causes my proccy to shoot upto 100C in hwmonitor.wierd thing is that it does not go further and kind of locks in the 99C to 100C temp on load.i noticed this problem when some of my games which should be running smooth started showing lag in the last few days.no OC whatsoever has been done.my case isn't much ventilated so i keep it's side open.i will check again to see if my fan is loose but i dont think so as i have not had any overheating problems in the past.i don't suppose that i should have gotten some stock thermal paste with my proccy purchase right?what could be causing the overheating here if it is not the crappy intel stock cooler?anyway i think i would have to buy a third party cooler right?please suggest me some good ones, and also the cooler should be compatible with LGA775 as well as LGA1155 as i might upgrade later and would not want to waste money on this cooler.please suggest me some good thermal paste too and also instruct me on how to apply it...a link would also do.thanks!

mate please do the necessary formatting, its real pain to read the thread.

And yes, TIM is necessary, my suggestion is to re-TIM it

Firstly, thermal paste OR TIM as we call it, is a very important item. Dont skip on it, you may damage your system. Since you have mentioned that no TIM has been applied, just get some and apply it. Local ones should be available @ 10bucks or so. Mostly, this is the root cause of your problem.

Now, as far as the max temps are concerned, your CPU has inbuilt temperature control. When it reaches the maximum safe allowed temperature, it will lower the frequency to reduce power. If still no differance, it will shutdown. So, dont use your machine without TIM.

And for god's sake, do some formatting. Its a PITA to read thru all that.

  1. Check your stock CPU fan's speed using SpeedFan software, check if its moving slower than it should.
  2. Check if your CPU cooler is attached properly to the motherboard.
  3. Now I am assuming that atleast some thermal compound was applied cause it didn't give any problems for 2yrs.
It might be the case that it was a local one which has outlived its functionality and might need to be re-applied. So it
would be suggested that you buy a thermal compound and apply it, local ones available at any computer near you will do the trick.
Dude please format you thread by editing it asap, it was a pain in the.. reading it. It would also help in getting answers for your query.

Hope it helps. :)
