So, I got to use the Omnia today for a while and here are few randomised views I would like to mention. Here a very quick run thru the same. Sorry no pictures in this thread as of now. But surely will fill in later.
Also before I begin , I have no intentions of claming that this phone is better than the HTC Diamond or the Iphone. Whatever I say below are my views and would vary from person to person. No flame wars here please.
As I continued walking with the phone held tightly in my hand and decided to walk and check it later on (yes , by no means I would like to drop it and go :O ) I've held the iphone and now the i900 and let me tell you the handheld grip of the phone is just perfect, yes even better than holding a HTC Touch. So if the metallic finish is bothering with the grip....no it aint.
The screen clarity is a bliss...excellent , photos and videos are so excellent to see on this...would be amazing to watch. The backlite is perfect and like most phones the levels can be adjusted (before I forget , you can even adjust the vibrate function of the phone for different levels, and yes - another amazing feature before I forget, the excellent self silent mode. If the
device placed screen down - the cellphone automatically enters into temporarily silent mode. Perfect for users during short meetings and wouldnt want to mess around with the profile settings each and every time, I really doubt if ANY other phone would do that)
Lets talk abt the screen visibility out in the sun...the sun was right behind me and so all I could see was a blank screen , nothing on it. Turning the other way around did make it more easier on the screen visibility but then it had to be at an angle. I had to hold the phone at a particular angle which would allow me to see the screen better so that would differ with different people. But then this is normal with all cellphones with a large display these days.
So a short recap till here...excellent screen clarity, videos and audio is amazing and excellent handling of the phone. In both the aspects the phone was more than my expectations , from the online pics I thought the phone would be bulky , but no i was wrong , its nice and light for the features it packs in. I could easily slide it in my front jeans pocket and was comfortable with it even when seated.
Lets come to the screen lock feature - well this phone really does need a third party tool for screen locking. Like the sliding keylock used in the iphone. Like all phones this phone too shuts off the screen when the main power button is pressed once BUT on press of the call pickup or the call cancel button the screen lights back up. With the phone in the bag or in the pocket if any of these buttons is pressed then then screen gets activated and hence the need for a proper screen locking application is needed. Can be easily taken care of.
Edit : As mentioned by IceFusion in thread below , the screen lock funtion is activated by pressing the 'End' key for 5 seconds
The automatic rotate feature was on in the phone and I found it damm irritating. With even a slight twist in the phone the screen would switch from landscape to portrait and vice versa. I did turn that feature off right away.
There is a option where the phone would vibrate on every tap as well (wonder why someone would want that)
I did browse a bit on GPRS and it was blazing fast. Google maps was fun to use and it found my 'exact' location in like 6 seconds. Was not able to check out GPS though. I wonder how fast the phone would be on Wifi - The word blazing would be applicable here too.
The phone dint feel slow and was very responsive to a non-windows , non-touchscreen cellphone user like me. The GUI is very comfortable and din't give the '?' look on my face at any time.
Camera - For once I felt I was using a actual digicam. The interface is 'fast' and yes i mean it. The flash is excellent and the camera funtion has 'x' number of modes just like a typical digicam would have. Right from different camera modes to color modes to exposure to red eye detection to smily detector to widescreen mode. Auto Focus is excellent and I mean the word excellent here. The face detection actually works!!! I tested the camera in a not so well-lit enviournment and yet the camera was able to detect faces perfectly and do the AF. Needless to say the video capture was above par as well.
I did find the mic. volume a bit lower than the other phones but then the noise cancellation works really well on the phone. For eg. if u are in a traffic then the traffic noise does get cancelled out a lot.
Messaging- I have always been against touchscreens for sms junkies. Since I am one the 1st thing I check in the phone is the keypad and the messaging funtion. The messaging screen is the usual windows like interface like on any windows phone. But let me tell you , I havent typed faster on any touchscreen phone before ( fyi..forgot to mention- the screen is responsive to nail press as well). With the T9 funtion turned on and the usual standard (Nokia-like) keypad, I was able to cruise through a message fast enuf.
Summary - The phone keeps up to its hype. With the other features like 3g and Tv-out and what not the phone keeps up to its expectations. An excellent cam and excellent screen is something catches the glipse of the phone. The phone looks good , feels good , sounds good and costs on par with the other higher ends phones that have lesser / equal features to offer than what this phone is capable of. Thats it from me ,just a few things I thought of putting across abt the Samsung i900.
Thanks for taking time and reading , I will try posting more as and when I get feedbacks.
