Hey guys,

I am planing to upgrade from my current AMD Phenom II X4 955BE to Intel i7 2600k + ASUS Maximus IV Extreme P67 Motherboard. and I was wondering if its worth Investing in i7 2600k right now or wait for the AWESOME! (at least in my opinion) LGA 2011's Intel i7 3930K Processor with ASUS Sabertooth X79 Motherboard.

I've seen its price on ebay & its costing a bomb right now... So should i wait for prices to come down as it has just been made available here in India.

Any ideas when the prices will go down? 6 months ? 1 year?

Thanks

The price won't drop. On ivy comes in, an oced ivy will be the fastest gaming processor in the world. Wait for it. Don't need to take my word, wait till June and you will know. Intel never reduces prices anyway, so in case you cant buy a 3930 today, it won't go down ever anyway.

True. Get ivy bridge & save money.

Not about saving money, an oced 3770k will be the fastest gaming CPU till ivy e, faster than 3960k for games oced past 5ghz

I guess i can wait for 2 months!

Although if i go for the LGA 2011 Motherboard & i7 3930K i wont be able to upgrade to ivy bridge processor, but if i go with the current generation of i7 2600K I should be able to upgrade to ivy bridge as that would still be LGA 1155.

Anyways thanks... BTW I am not looking for Gaming PC, I will continue using my Phenom II X4 for gaming, The i7 is for VMware ESX Server 5.0

First, There will be ivy bridge processors for 2011 Socket as well (will be called Ivy-bridge E).

Secondly, for VMware ESX, if you will using heavily loaded VM's, a 3930x will be much better than a 2600K. Though the price difference will only be justified by the how crucial your work is.

^ I didn't know there was a Ivy-bridge E in that case a LGA 2011 would be the way to go. although it would depend when would a LGA 2011 ivy Bridge processor would be launched? as the April 2012 release date only states for LGA 1155 Processor

The System will be used for Development of applications mostly Android / iPhone + will be my Test Lab for testing new released software from different vendors.

Ivy e will release around end 2012 by when haswell would be near anyway. Also the cost difference isn't justified unless you also buy 32gb ram ddr3 2133 cas9 with radeon 7970 cf

Do you need such a powerful system for dev work ? Im noob but I think that sorta config will only help if you work with lots of mult threaded apps.

A Part of it will be used for Developing apps, & i know that for Android / iPhone not much of a processing power is required. But it will have multiple roles testing products such as Citrix XenApp, Server 8, Lync etc..

I do know that i7 2600k will work perfectly fine for my present requirement. but I am thinking 3 years down the line... I might also sell VPS to developers.
