Guys,

My Dell XPS 15 is covered under warranty until 2013. Dell is offering 10% discount on warranty extensions. Is it advisable to pay for 2 year extended warranty(Next Business Day + Complete Cover) for 14000 Rs.?

I brought Studio 15 with 3 year warranty (Next Business Day + Complete Cover). After 6 months Dell replaced overheated Studio 15 unit with XPS 15 because by that time Studio 15 was discontinued.

I can foresee that in 2014, certainly the shape and features of modern laptops will surely change. The biggest driving factor is launch of Windows 8 by the end of 2012. All laptop makers will change their strategies. New laptops with have touch interface. 3D screens might as well be more common.

The question I have to answer is that - why I would be using an XPS 15 which would be outdated by then in 2015? Just because my XPS would be trash by then and instead of repairing it Dell might replace it with a laptop which would be the latest?

I think I should not opt for warranty extension. Any advice?

chances are that dell might replace the laptop with refurbished one of the same kind which may or may not have better specs.
I would like to know how many of the forum members have got an upgraded laptop under the warranty as replacement.
Even i have XPS 15 and am in similar dilemma about warranty extension.

Dell always replace the laptop with equal or higher specs. They never downgrade the system even if you ask for. Like in my case, I have already got new XPS 15 because Studio 15 series was stopped.

Extend the warranty. Its worth the cost unless you are ready to spend enough to buy a new laptop till 2015.

And yes Dell will never downgrade the specs. My friend has had his laptop replaced 3 times under complete cover :P

Got replaced my Studio 1645 to XPS 15 L501x. Except the awesome speakers & display, rest all configuration was almost same.

@OP - My warranty expired on 11 Dec 2011 & I extended mine for 2 years with complete cover.

Thanks for the replies, but I am afraid of following..........

a. If XPS 15 is able to run for the whole warranty period until 2015, unwillingly I would have to stick to it because I paid for extended warranty. I will definitely be looking for an upgrade during 2015 (or may be 2014 end).

b. If there is any need of replacement, they might give me any low-end laptop (e.g. Intel i3 laptop in 2011, not my thing) because they will be replacing a 5 year old XPS. Is it SAFE to assume that Dell will offer me a cutting edge laptop of 2015 technology?

a. You never know ! Laptops start failing after 1-1.5 years of usage.

b. they don't give low end.

b. Yes, but what I actually meant was current core-i7 Quad-core laptop will be low-end as compared to new laptops in 2015. Should I assume that Dell will give me a laptop slightly better than current one(still low-end as per 2015 standards) OR the high end of 2015?

No that's not the case dell will replace your laptop depending on their price category

Ex you got a 50 k laptop with 3 year complete cover 2nd year your laptop failed then they replace your laptop with same 50k priced 1s at that time so don't worry & get the cover dell is a reputable brand so never cheats :D

Thanks 'JJ The Great' for the clarification and advice. Meanwhile I have already made the payment yesterday that was the last day of 10% discount offer. My XPS is now 14k more costly :)

Warranty extension will take a week.

@wecaz - I forgot to reply here.

As per my experience Dell gives as per current value. In May 2010 I had bought SXPS 1645 whose value at that time was 74k [but I paid only 58K, Dell employee discount. Can u beat that :ohyeah:] Then I got replaced with XPS L501x in Dec 2010 whose config value was 75K at that time. And they also extended my warranty, hence it finished recently in Dec 2011 [approx 6 months+ warranty]

Now I have extended mine for 2 years with complete cover.

I am very impressed with Dell's service. My sis also have Dell, she had an issue. All she did was one simple call. Engineer [who was stupid :P] checked the lappie & replaced the sound card. Issue didn't solve. He took the lappie & they gave her new one within 15 days.

My cousin, who is a lazy ass, while sleeping he kept his lappie on chair near bed. Only god knows what he did in sleep [don't think pervert :P], next morning he saw his lappie on ground with screen broken. Called Dell within 2 days he got new screen + speakers.

I have seen my friends who have Sony & HP lappie's crying over these things. I live in a 3rd world country [:P] where there is no authorized service centers. My friends have to go nearest cities like B'lore or Hyd, where I just do a simple call. And which is toll free :bleh: Sony charges 3K per extension but accidental warranty is not covered nor they get premium on site warranty. Agreed, Dell's warranty is costly & it is worth IMHO. Come on, who gonna replace your lappie you spill coffee on it !?

IMHO, Dell has best service in categories of Laptops. Period.

I wish Dell would replace my laptop with a newer model. I have a Vostro 3700. List of things changed so far.

1. Mainboard - Thrice!

2. Heatsink + Fan - Thrice

3. Keyboard - Once - (Because the 'engineer' forgot to re-attach the backlight wire Dell sent a new Keyboard)

4. Bottom base and Top base - Again because the 'engineer' damaged the system.

5. Bluetooth Module - Again due to the 'engineer' taking my Bluetooth Module with him when he replaced the top base.

After my latest motherboard change my fingerprint and card readers don't work anymore.

Please help!!!

With business models the aim is for the model and config to never change.

I didn't get what you are saying.

I'm just glad that I got the 3 year warranty. I don't think I'm gonna go for a Dell ever again. And it also sucks that I can't find one decent windows laptop which is comparable to a MacBook Pro in terms of build quality and battery life.

Vostro is in Dell's business range

The target market for these laptops is the enterprise market(companies)

Companies have IT departments which manage stuff like reimaging, formatting, etc

So, they buy tha laptops in bulk (100's or even 1000's). All with the same config

This means all laptops are identical.

Identical laptops mean the IT dept. does not need to keep a track of different configs, different drivers, different hardware, etc

Any software problem is dealt with an image reload

Any hardware prob with a HDD swap.

Giving a laptop of a different model will mess this up

Yes u should........m extending my warranty since 2005 from dell..and have replaced stuff of more than thrice the price of laptop
<

By all means do it.

I've had an XPS 1530 for five years now, and I've spent more than 14k on its repair, (non DELL people, total ruthless towards my laptop) and the pain of backup/restore every-time it goes on repair, the downtime during repair (shifting work to another computer, etc, etc,). And now, those ruthless people have ruthlessly told me that the motherboard of my laptop has turned RED in every place with all the repairs, so don't bring it back if it goes down again... Boy, 14k seems too cheap from here, believe me.

If you are willing to spend MBP level prices and need a windows option then go for the thinkpads, they are built like tanks, dont compare vostro(cheapest business model of dell) with thinkpad/MBP level laptops.
