First do I need a DVI-D cable ? how big a difference would it make in picture quality .

I got a Dell In2030mf which is a 20 inch LED monitor .

The VGA is doing is work very well and I feel has a decent qualtiy .

Also does a VGA and DVI-D have a noticeable difference in my 20 inch monitor ? .

Now please tell me from where can I get a new DVI-D or Dual( 24+1 pin ) cable at the cheapest cost ? .

Am open to online purchases . Read mediahome once sold hdmi cable for 99. Any killer deal like that now available anywhere ? .

Thanks a lot

dvi-d cables carry digital signals whereas vga carries analog. The difference is a lot. vga is a bit blurry on lcd monitors. you should switch to dvi to get the most out of your lcd monitor.

The brightness, clarity, will all change noticibly.

Thanks a lot dominator

Thanks 6pack , that clear everything I wanted to know .

Now finding a cheap DVI-D to DVI-D from somewhere . Every place I went physically mostly has single link only . Both my monitor and motherboard have dvi-d connections only . If anyone has any idea please tell .

I think you are getting confused between DVI-D and single link.

DVI is of two types

DVI-A - DVI analog. Used to connect to VGA outputs. You can ignore this.

DVI-D - DVI digital. Equivalent to HDMI (on the video front) and this is what you need. There are two types of DVI-D cables. Single Link that will support resolutions upto 1920x1200. Double link that will support 2560x1600 as well.

So when a shop is selling you single link, it is type of DVI-D cable. If you are at a resolution lower than 1920x1200, you can go ahead and buy it.

Basically, look at the cable. If the pins match one of first four configurations in this image, it will work for you. (DVI-I is just a cable that supports DVI-D and DVI-A)

Thanks a ton friend .

My monitor and mobo have the 24+1 pin config . So can I connect the 18+1 in my 24+1 pin slots ?

I was of the opinion that I compulsorily need the 24+1 config only , the 18+1 wont work !! .

Anything that supports dual link will also support single link. It just means that using a single link cable, you can only run up to a 1920x1200 resolution.

Do remember to buy a cable from a reputed brand. Prolink is good. Else try to get cables that came with monitors. Cheap local cables (99 ones) have severe interference issues.

hi ,

thanks for the advice .

Well after reading some threads I got to know that its not worth spending a lot on digital cables .

Any cheap cable would suffice .

What would that prolink cable cost approx ? . Cant find it on e-bay or any website .

Actually when looking for HDMI cable I also wanted to buy DVI but I did not find it anywhere - chroma , reliance , hypercity , etc .

Any idea of any store in Navi Mumbai or some online link ? .

Thanks a lot

Prolink is gonna be pretty expensive by the local standards.

Better you buy one from #deepakvrao as his cables are ones that came with monitors. Even I am getting VGA cables from him.

He has single link DVI and I am in need of a dual one . Better buy one cable once and for all , I may upgrade my monitor later , so ..

thanks for the reply

Even I wasn't sure which DVI cable I need, thanks for explaining it in a succinct manner.
