Hi fellas i have a decent enough Machine to do some of my Photoshop & 3Ds MAX work on with the following Specs

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - 2.4GHz

Kingston 4Gb RAM

nVidia 9600GT 512mb

Windows XP SP3 32bit

now in the system properties im showed on 3GB or ram & i guess its becuase of the 32 bit nature of the operating system. I was thinking maybe i should upgrade to a 64bit OS.

Will Upgrading to Windows XP 64bit give me any major advantages & Will my Softwares & games work well with it ?

Thank You

Yes it will...
Ur system is pretty much solid and 64bit would run really smooth.
Applications would be able to use full 4GB RAM for rendering and Games will be more responsive due to the extra RAM.
Earlier there were issues with drivers but now like everything has a 64bit driver.
So, just make the move and find out for urself whether it was worth it or not.

FYI: 64bit codecs are still a problem, so there might be issues with creating thumbnails, not playback. Xvid recently came out with the 64bit version. Haali, CoreAVC and AC3 Filter are still to come.

Good Luck...:hap2:

Why not give Win 7 beta (x64) a try before taking the plunge?

i moved to vista 64bit mainly to get all of my ram to show as well as because xp refused to play GTA4 for me.

My take on vista :
- I got GTA 4 and all my programs to run on vista (except nero)..
- didn't have any major gains or losses in performance

My take on win 7:
- It's got all the pros of vista & it's optimized
- my start-up & shut down times are even better than xp
- again no problems in running applications

I do not think there is an upgrade from 32bit to 64bit version of windows. Would recommend waiting for windows 7. Till then stick with xp 32.

If you are going to pay for the OS, dont put your money in XP or Vista now. Paying or via the free route ( ;) ), go for Windows 7 directly.

You shall not only see a more responsive and faster system, but since Windows 7 loads services concurrently / simultaneously, you shall see the power of your Quad core with it!

Guys,

We should not forget that Windows 7 is still a BETA, not a final Edition. It's always advisable to try Beta, not use it primarily.
I was using Win 7 for a few days and found some issues like certain software not installing, some drivers went for black screens etc.
Moreover, gaming on Win 7 is still less than Vista 64 coz of driver maturity in Vista.

Vista 64 is optimized as of now and would be the right choice. Even if it doesn't have some new features of Win 7, but it's more stable and more compatible with applications.

However, if u are one of those who wants to install a new OS every other week, I would definitely recommend Win 7.
If u are one of those who wants stability and installs OS like in 6 months or so, Vista 64 is the way to go...:hap2:

Actually the problem is that due to work constraints i have been forced to use Autodesk 3DS Max 9 which runs bug free only in windows Xp , so my final question is that how is Windows Xp Pro x64 as an operating system , is gaming decent enough on it ?

If you use is only for checking mails; playing games; net stuff then Vista x64 is good. If you do quite some work and proccy intensive stuff then try XP x64 first. All the 32 apps work on 64 bit OS so dont worry. Only check for mobo and h/w drivers before installing a 64 bit os. First try a dual boot and then if everything works fine; format the original 32 bit OS and install the 64 bit OS.

As far as i know, XP 64 was known to be too buggy and unstable, even if there were drivers for the hardware.
I would suggest Vista 64 and run the application u need in XP compatibility mode. XP 64 was like non-existent...Even games didn't run properly.

Go for Vista 64 dude and as everybody suggests, keep a dual boot of Win 7...:)

The thing is that XP can run GTA IV flawless or somewhat with a C2D while Vista requires a C2Q or AMD Tri core.

As far as i know, system requirements are a little higher than XP considering u are comparing a 8 year old OS with a year old...:bleh:

Since the guy already has a Quad, what's better than Vista which can utilize the cores efficiently or a dual boot of Win 7 to run processes in parallel when u want a little more speed. :)

I have the same issue. I upgraded my rams and now i have Transcend 4gb ram and i am using Windows 7 32 bit.

I am not upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit bcoz i m not sure whether all games will work on Windows 7 64 bit or not.

Anyone have installed Windows 7 64 bit? Please suggest me whether i should upgrade or not?

I play games like Assassins Creed, COD5, Crysis Warhead, CS, Fear 2 etc etc

Antimalware programs like Malwarebytes and A-squared do not provide realtime behavior-based protection on x64, though you can run scans manually. This would be something to consider, especially if you indulge in risky behavior. So in effect, there's no difference between free and paid-for versions of these programs on x64.
