Hi guys,

I need your help on this. i have a WD elemets 500GB drive, it has warranty till 9/17/2014.
I have some issues with the drive. for the sake of clarity i have listed them down below

  1. Some times my drive doesn't get detected(But it shows up in the device manager) when i connect it to my PC, it makes a click, click sound. only After couple of tries it does get detected.
  2. Once i copied a couple of RAR files from MY WD drive to my PC, and when i extracted them i got a CRC error.
So i think my WD drive has some problems and i want to RMA it. do you guys thinks thats a good idea?
Also here is my HD tune screen grab.

Thanks,
UG

There is a Wd smart utility available on wd support site. Run a short and long test. It will give pass or fail status and you can take a printout of that report to get your drive rma'd.

Ok i downloaded there Utility, and ran a Quick test. there was no option to perform long or short DST's.
After running the quick test i got the following error see the screenshot.

Test Option: QUICK TEST
Model Number: WD Elements 1042
Unit Serial Number:
Firmware Number: 1006
Capacity: 500.11 GB
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 06-Quick Test on drive 2 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 97 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 2!
Test Time: 19:55:11, July 21, 2013

Mate just go ahead and send it for RMA.

My 1 tb passport was a bit slow and had just one relocation error and had no major problem, I chose reason as slow performance and sent for RMA. Item was picked up and brand new, newer model 1tb my passport was delivered in a week.

P. S. In my case wd utility showed drive is fine.

I am also facing the same issue. My 500gb WD green gives 'data read error while booting'. Although it does boots after several attempts. I accessed the SMART info for the disk and found issue. Will RMA, along with screenshot of SMART info. Hopefully that should suffice.

Use the application to access the drive SMART data and look for:
- CURRENT PENDING SECTOR
- UDMA CRC ERROR COUNT
(since you already have HD Tune, you can use that as well)

If the above parameters are not zero, then its an issue.
