Forum Feedback Shoutbox on TE!

java chat isnt a good idea coz itll prolly be firewalled

and many ppl wouldnt wanna make a new thread for every little question they may have, those are good for the shoutbox or just everyday banter

but that defeats the purpose of having a forum.

Forum is current activity + archive. SO people can refer to it again when they want. They can see problems of others which will solve their own problems, gain knowledge. Thats what forum is about. Its not 1:1 quick fix support center.

Even if you have small question, post it.

A shoutbox, java chat or anything else besides forums would fail miserably.

The reason being that no one has time to chat and discuss to other person in real time. Its convenient to come home after a days work and hit the new posts button and read everything anytime.

Also in a real time conversation when even 7-8 are chatting simultaneously then you cannot follow everyone. You just cannot respond to one person and the discussion would drift away every 5 minutes.

We had a chat program long back on TE and it was high on server resources and hardly anyone ever used that.

I had asked the admins for a shoutbox, but apparently its heavy on server resources .. so will have to be put off for now :)

There will be no load on the server if a hosted shoutbox solution is implemented; costs like $2 a month. But either way, you don't need it...

Well, but isn't TE on a Dedicated Server?

A Shoutbox, ie. an AJAX Shoutbox, shouldnt be to server intensive.

Not that I want a Shoutbox, just putting in my 2 cents.

I still dont get the need for all this. Fine, some people wanted IRC and unofficial IRC was set up and it failed.

IRC was never encouraged. I must've PM-ed some 4 mods asking whether if we put up a sticky with the address of the channel and a detailed HOWTO, which Saumil had written so people would come try it <-- No response. I also asked the mods to try and give it a shot. None of them did.

Why is there this paranoia about IRC?!!?! No, IRC isn't going to kill the forums and agreed Java and shoutbox are both bad ideas IMHO. IRC channels - there are plenty of them for all sorts of communities - be it Tech related be it just pure gaming, designing, you name it. Possibilities - Endless. Getting together and playing games, casual talks, quick posting of links, etc. It's a completely different experience.

Let's hope the mods take up initiative this time around, please PM me and some of us will post a thread with all the information needed!

^^ LOL is it the CJ from kawa ?

And chat aint a great idea as kawa demonstrated will be full of flamers etc...

Yes, It is me! This is TE; I think we're better than that. TE doesn't seem like the forum where 13yr olds challenge each other to prove their manliness by playing 1v1 CS games and then return to brag about it and then some more challenges! How many excuses to avoid IRC! Right click, Ignore the person flaming..end of story.

kawa was full of ppl like sihag
im sure te has ppl with iq more than that of a baldmonkey

IRC would work without acting as a replacement to the forums, but if noone cares to login, it will fail.

Exactly the point I raised in the last thread! We really really require that sticky most of all to get the word across. Then we need people with 24/7 connections to stay there. It isn't going to work if 100 people log in at random times of the day and stay for 5minutes and leave.

Shoutbox is a single-thread-forum and isn't flexible. There's a reason why so many communities choose IRC even after SOOOO many years. It's an idea that actually works, just needs a push start...

Try something like this to try out chat - Set a time this weekend - say something on Friday or Saturday night when everyone's home and have an online TE meet. Put a sticky and get as many people to join in and just chat....

Well you are asking us to do something without doing your homework. We just said that we will not give it a status of official IRC channel. So you are free to post a thread and ask the members to come chat.

Dont expect the staff to come over and observe at your convenience as we really dont have time these days. When we feel the need or urge we will definitely be there. Moreover if it seems fine at a later stage then we might even add a disclaimer about it and perhaps give it a official standing in terms of a sticky thread or more.

Not to offend or discourage anyone from taking any initiatives but most of the times an overzealous member just backs off. Not everyone will share the same zeal as you, so you have to push your own fort until people start to see value in your efforts and join in. Thats actually a good reason to persist with something you believe in. (Too philosophical I know :P ) And a good reason why you should not expect the other members to be as exuberant as you.

At present you just need an active thread which you are free to create. My best wishes are with you. :)

Yea, unofficial only. Noone is asking for an official TE channel.
But noone ever logged on except me, CJ, Garav and Funky over a 1 week period. And now CJ is the only one who logs on.

That is where a sticky with instructions (and disclaimers) would help since half the people have trouble setting up irc.
Sticky's don't necessarily mean the forum has anything to do with the subject.

You're basically asking someone to launch this channel and run it on their own, and if it's successful TE will take credit for it and make it official?

They're asking for your help in order to make the channel successful and your response translates to: screw you! Very smooth lol. Under a lot of pressure at school?

afaik , the chat thing is a total flop idea . dont get me wrong . It works excellent solo . for eg : if there was no www.techenclave.com but only lets say TE on DALnet then you might have found loadsa people der .

However TE has too strong an identity as a forum for it to spill over to a IRC chat room .

We has tried it with a desi torrent website . we had set one up where the total active members were over 15000 people . and still we would have 4-5 people on IRC .

People will never switch from a working solution or what they are confortable with . Thats the sad part .
