If you get it via DHL/FedEx, they usually handle customs for you. But, they do charge hefty fee for it.
If you get it via regular EMS speedpost, it comes in and sits at the customs office for a while. As long as they know to valuate it, they send it through a postman who collects the charges from you a your doorstep before handing over the parcel. In case they are unable to decide how to valuate it, they ask you to pay them a visit and clear things up.
Also, people have visited the customs office on their own accord when it has seemed like they were inordinately delaying the release.
