SimCity 2013 has finally launched, after fans of this genre waiting nearly 10 years for this revamped title which brings it up to par with 2013 technology (or so at least, with reports coming in that SimCity runs on a single core only and is unable to make use of multiple core effectively, or at all for that matter). SimCity 2013 has been the victim of the always ON DRM that many publishers have tried and learnt from their mistakes (Assassin's Creed II anyone). But it seems EA still wanted to go ahead and give it a go. Well, that's what brings this otherwise brilliant game down to the gutters.
SimCity 2013

Till the day of release, the entire fan community was waiting to start playing the game (having pre-loaded it on STEAM and everything). And then the game releases. Of course everyone is online trying to play it, note the word "trying". EA's servers couldn't cope with the traffic, and this happened:

SimCity Servers Down

A brilliant game that nobody could play? It's frustrating for people who bought the game to not be able to play it, it's even worse if people who pirated it are playing the same game on the same servers. EA's DRM did one thing right, that's to not let people play this game that was worked so hard upon by it's developers. Way to go ruining and taking away some development house's work.

The situation is improving however, but not much. Owners and fans are angry and a no-brainer boycott of EA game titles as well as SimCity is being followed. The only consolation is that EA has agreed that have messed up badly and are compensating by providing all owners with a free game, on March 18th. Here's what they have to say:
In the last 48 hours we increased server capacity by 120 percent. It’s working – the number of people who have gotten in and built cities has improved dramatically. The number of disrupted experiences has dropped by roughly 80 percent” reads EA’s statement and continues.

“The good news is that SimCity is a solid hit in all major markets. The consensus among critics and players is that this is fundamentally a great game. But this SimCity is made to be played online, and if you can’t get a stable connection, you’re NOT having a good experience. So we’re not going to rest until we’ve fixed the remaining server issues.”

There's fresh news and some ray of hope that SimCity may go offline in the near future, which is about the only thing that will calm people down and make the game like it was originally meant to be playable.

Have you bought SimCity 2013? Are you able to play it? Or are you planning on buying it? Comments is open.
