Hi,

I would like to play against my cousin/friend on another PC in say unreal tournament. In my office, this wasn't a problem. But how can I achieve this at home?

i.e. what is the basic infrastructure required to connect two computers such that I create a network wherein I can game against another player on another PC? Will a simple LAN cable suffice(no idea what this will do or if it is right at all. I'm just guessing here.)?

Hoping that some of the mods who are involved in networking on a daily basis would lend their expert opinion.

crossover LAN cable..
not the router<-> lan cable...
got mine crimped from a friend who had the crimping tool

U get these cables at most comp elec stores... The shopkeeper called it a PC-PC connecting cable.. so.. I guess if U ask for that it would be enough...

i paid 40rs for it from Mercy Elec at chennai..

Thanks for the replies guys. What do I do once I purchase the cable....I mean sotware wise. How do I go about configuring the network in win xp?

hmm...connect the cables

set the same subnet(255.255.255.0) on both comps in network connection and set the ips(192.168.1.1,192.168.1.2) in tcpip, check WINS and enable 'netbios over tcpip' for them

that should do

and If u want to enable file sharing.. make sure that they are on the same work group... manually set the Ip's to something like 192.168.1.x and then run the "setup new network" wizard...
