So apparently Arcane Studios, with a little help from Half-Life 2's Art Director, is working on a new kind of shooter. They're trying to fuse singleplayer with multiplayer in the hopes of creating something we've never seen before: crossplayer.

The first comparable thing that comes to mind is what Atari and Eden Studios did with Test Drive Unlimited: players drive around the island completing singleplayer races while having the chance to challenge another player to an instant multiplayer race anywhere out of the 1000plus miles of Hawaiian road. Something like this works well in TDU, but in a first-person shooter ?

What is known so far is that the game is called "The Crossing" (how appropriate) and that it will run on Valves Source engine. So expect the visuals to be rather satisfying, as you can see from a very short clip of gameplay at the end of the embedded video below.

And as mentioned in the video below, more info is expected in the Games for Windows magazine and the upcoming season premiere of the 1UP show. Lets hope this game will turn out to be a good one and not something that's hiding behind a new hype word.

What's your take on this ? What do you think this crossplayer thing could possibly be like ? Drop a comment below.

on simple question. To be more precise, do these single players carry on with their missions, while being online and logged into the steam account. While others do the same , and when they come across each other do they have the option for co-opt or they kill each other.....

Isnt this an interesting scenario

From Wikipedia :

The Crossing is an upcoming game, under development at Arkane Studios with assistance from Valve Corporation, which fuses single- and multi-player gameplay. It takes places in a science-fiction setting with human and sub-human/alien teams competing. Civilian bystanders have been seen in urban environments in released media.

I just saw this video on youtube.
