It is amazing that no one has mentioned about the viewing distance.

First let us know your viewing distance from the TV so based on that u can decide.

Because if u r seated too far it doe'nt matter if u r watching a dvd rip or a blu ray rip

dude.. i completely disagree with you.. no matter at what distance you are sitting from the TV is absolutely irrespective.. theres a hell of a lot, i mean a LOT LOT LOT of

difference in those crappy 700mb rips and the 4.5 gig 720p rips.. if you cannot see a difference between 720p rips and 700mb rips, i suggest you get your eyes checked..

and for the people saying its a matter of perception, i disagree there too... good quality is good quality.. theres no question about perception over there.. .we are not talking philosophy over here.. its a materialistic thing.. the difference is clearly visible... you cant say that whether the earth revolves around the sun or vice versa is a matter of perception..

and not only do the 720p rips provide much superior video quality, even the sound quality is much higher than those 700mb rips.. if anyone believes they have taste for good sound quality, they will very easily be able to hear the difference and see the difference..

#[member='Being.smart'] .. its good that you are against piracy.. even i prefer being on the correct side of the law. but i'd expect the entertainment companies not to rip off peoples pockets like this.. you may be able to rent blu ray movies, but then you would be completely dependent on the video library owner for that.. if you buy the discs, they are so damn expensive.. if the companies dont want their products to be pirated, they should sell it at a more reasonable price.. its not that blu ray costs so much.. its just that its a new technology, and thats why the companies are charging a premium for them. a very very high premium.. its absolutely outrageous..

#[member='andy1978'] .. oh i didnt realize your TV must have inbuilt software and hardware to be able to play a wide variety of formats.. then you neednt even buy a separate player.. 99 percent of all the movies will work from within your TV itself.. just plugin your USB drive..

if your computer doesnt have an HDMI port, getting a graphics card will easily solve the issue. .if you just wanna buy one for an HDMI port, you can go for the not very expensive ones costing around 6 to 7 K. that way you will also have a reasonable balance over the graphics capabilities of your card..

and about the bigger files being inferior than the smaller 720p rips, you just need to check the video and audio bitrate before downloading. .most of the Highdef movies available for download have these descriptions written..

i have a 1080p rip of AVATAR, around 11.5 GB, with the video and audio bitrate both being very very high.. the resolution and sharpness of picture as well as audio quality is definitely better than 720p rips.. its just that, the bitrates and quality of sources need to be the same. if that is true, then theres no reason for a 1080p to be in any way inferior than a 720p..

But i accept, 720p is more logical as it strikes the optimum balance between file size, video and audio quality, and is also much less resource hungry than a 1080p rip.. with 720p my processor usage is around 40 percent, with 1080p rips it goes up to more than 90 percent..

Which TV do you have? I mean size model?

How is 3D rip different from the regular 1080p rip?

LG LED (IPS panel) 3D TV 32".

again depends (not mentioning the encoder).

i have seen 1 GB 1080p rips of movies looking better than a 4GB rips but audio quality was a compromise.

but if you have a better HT sound system you can get over the audio loss.

Absolutely, I also download 1.3GB 1080p rips. They are much better than 5-6gb 1080p rips. I have seen no difference (in video quality manner, not talking about audio though) in untouched 1080p rips and 1.3gb 1080p rips.

and also i am against piracy, tht's why i am more on the side of blu-ray

Unless you have some very old system, that seems strange. If you have graphics card or newer than 2010 system then you can enable hardware gpu acceleration to offload your CPU

no man.. i have got an AMD 64bit 2.2 ghz laptop, 4 gb ram, ati radeon hd 4650 with 1 gb graphics memory.. so its pretty decent. or maybe it might be because the 1080p rips that i have are in mp4 formats while the 720p are .mkv with H.264 codecs.. i am not sure, but i think from my observation that even in general, mp4 uses more cpu to decode and also starts a couple of seconds late than the .mkv files.. also file seeking in the player is slower in .mp4 formats.. not all of them, but quite a few of them.. this never happens in my pc with the H.264 codec files..

Guys please refrain from talking of downloading and stuff (you don't own the title and thus is illegit talk). Please tread along these lines carefully. This is a grey area!

This is far away from the term called "Piracy" mate.

i had helped somebody to install a sony 46 " LED . 700 MB is absolute crap . Now i only watch 10 GB+ rips and today got a full BD movies . i started with a 700 MB , then 4 GB , then 8 GB and finally settled on 12 GB+ for optimum utilization and viewing experience of LED . You have purchased 80k + LED tv so utilize it and not watch poor quality rip . To see the difference get a full BD, rips as per size . as someone suggested encoding matters a lot and one 720p can be better than 1080p if not properly encoded . If you can download only watch 12 GB+ rips . rest is your perception and decision

Reading through some of the post most of them were utterly crap.Im not sure whether the tv itself can play those high encoded most LCD fails to play encoded movies with xavi filter.I mostly watch movies on my LCD monitor with playon plugged in so have never faced any issues. And whoever said that 700mb rips are bad I can show him a 1080p which is worse than 700 mb rip credits to encoders who add extra sharpness to make movies look better.

It doesn't matter whether it is mp4 or mkv, its the encoding which is important. With your GPU, anything except AVC High 5 profile should be possible to be hardware accelerated. Get the latest driver and follow this guide to enable it. Download MediaInfo (free tool) to get the details about the movie file.
