Linux Slow browsing / downloading in Ubuntu

First of all, i would like to thank all members who helped my install n configure Ubuntu properly.

The problem is that downloading & browsing speed is much lower in UBuntu than Windows 7 ... In Win 7, i get an average of 300-350 kbps speed and browsing is very fast ...

While in Ubuntu its hardly 120 kbps ... n browsing is as slow as if using a 256K connection ... any solution for this .. and anyone else facing the same problem ...
 
what server you can using to test the speed? try downloading a 50mb file from sites like microsoft.com etc. see how much time it takes.

@Gaurish - Tried Mumbai n Singapore ... same result .. pings as bad as 500-600 .... downloaded from NVidia site .. same bad speed ... IN Win 7 same file was downloaded in 8 mins, in Ubuntu almost 20 mins ... Win 7 ping approx 200 ...

What can be the possible causes for this .. m reli frustrated ... browsing is even worse ...

Using rp-pppoe ... can the problem be related to this ..

strange issue! this should NOT happen

can you post the output of following:

And also, what network card you have? also, post the the output of following from windows

to debug, you will have to compare differences between network settings in windows vs in Ubuntu. Also, try contact 5net and ask about the issue.
 
From what I can remember of such issues I've read about on forums etc, two possible fixes are to disable IPv6 globally (sysctl command, google for it) because it causes havoc with some ADSL/wifi routers, and/or second step is installing latest kernel/driver updates (hopefully you have latest Ubuntu?) by enabling the "backports" software repository option in Software Center or Software Sources, because some drivers are known to have performance issues which are fixed in latest/later versions.

Also, try using latest Ubuntu 10.10 release with its built-in ADSL dialler avoiding the roaring penguin PPPoE dialler (rp-pppoe), not that I'm saying this is the cause, just to eliminate the chances of it.

Other options, are you using USB or ethernet cable to your modem? Switch from one to the other and check mobo BIOS for any potential indications of IRQ conflicts and such between USB/ethernet/sound/video/PCI and what not, also can post the output of "dmesg" command from Ubuntu to see if any warning/error messages give any clues there.

Ya my Ubuntu is fully updated ... n Ubuntu 10.10 I cant use the built-in ADSL dialer as there are multiple access concentrators in my LAN ..

I m not using a modem .. a simple Ethernet cable connected to 5net LAN ...

looking at this, you should not be able to browse. I am guessing your network connection is not configured correctly because your network card does not have a IP address assigned to it.

so explain your network. things like Type(DSL,Cable etc), DHCP/Static IP. also in windows do you use a dialer to connect? or its just plug and play via DHCP.

If you correctly configure it, your network would have a IP address, like this

If you are using firefox, it is a well-known problem in all linux flavours. Firefox searches for ip6 connection and then goes back to ip4. Try using a different browser, such as chromium (Google-less version of Chrome).
 
I tried Chromium as well .... same prob ..

What i tried:

1) Disabled IPv6 Globally

2) Disabled IPv6 in Firefox

3) Removed duplicate eth entries

4) Used Public DNS servers in place of my ISP DNS servers.

5) Contacted my ISP, they said that no support for Linux. Told me to install a router which i plan to do soon .. but I don't think that will help in any way ...

All these could not yeild any results ... now thinking of installing Fedora Core 14 ...

Please tell the steps on how you connect? and also describe your network?

your routing table is not set correctly. Further looking at ifconfig, your network card also isn't set correctly
 
In Ubuntu, i use rp-pppoe to connect to the net ... my ISP is 5net .. LAN network .. use DC++ w/o any probs getting max speeds ... our LAN is blocked for direct use, so we have to use DC++ for file sharing.

In Win 7, i use a normal WAN Miniport (pppoe) dialer to connect ...

There are many Access Concentrators on my LAN .. so need to specify service name in Win 7/XP and AC name n service name in Ubuntu ...

How do I set my network card and routing table ....
 
I also had this same problem when I had TATA internet .. (normal cat5 cable one directly connected to pc ) ...

I haven't tried with 5net though ... and if anyone wants to know 5net is well ermm .. PPPOE dialer walla net :p a direct CAT5 cable goes into the pc and then use dialer to connect

you need not setup pppoe via rp-pppoe anymore.

ubuntu now supports them directly via network connection setups on the system panel.

as for connection speed issue.

i can confirm that it is not relating to pppoe.

i am on 5net and over ubuntu via dhcp from my router.

i also get slow speeds.

installed 10.10 2days ago so will try to find what the cause is and update.

Bro, can u give me instructions on how to setup net connection directly in 10.10 ... i had installed 10.10, but removed it coz was nt able to configure net access in it ...

Do u get slow speeds only in Ubuntu or on Win 7 / XP as well ?? And I dont have a router .. i m connected directly via LAN ...

Hmm I can't really imagine OS making any difference over hardware. Its the same for me as well man. Can you try a live cd and use the network manager to connect? I am pretty sure your OS installation... _network installation_ is messed up.

Ya will install Fedora 14 now for testing ...

Actually had installed 10.10, but rp-pppoe does not work in 10.10 due to tcl dependency errors ... so reverted back to 10.04.
