Slow Speed For Single Download & High Speed For Multiple Downloads. Why???

Im having a laptop (Windows 7 - 64 Bit) and a desktop (Windows XP - 32 Bit) and a a Huawei E1750 3G USB Modem (BSNL 3G Connection with full signal in my home).

With the modem, im getting around 500 KB/sec for single download in Windows 7 OS.

For eg : I downloaded a sample file from AVG website : http://download.avg.com/softw/90/update/u9iavi3290dc.bin

With my Windows 7 OS (Laptop), i was able to download the file at speed of around 500 Kb/sec (Connection speed showed around 4 - 4.5 Mbps in mobile partner).

With the same modem, i downloaded the same file with my Windows XP OS Desktop, and i am getting speed of only 35 to 50 Kb/sec (Connection speed showed around 500 to 600 KB/sec in mobile partner). But if i download more than 2 or 3 files at same time, its giving a total download speed of around 500 Kb/sec (4 - 4.5 Mbps).

Im having BSNL Broadband 2 Mbps connection too. Im able to download tht single file at 230 Kb/sec using BSNL Broadband without problem from my desktop.

Can anyone help me in spotting out the problem? Why im not able to get full speed for single file download with my E1750 modem in my desktop but at the same time im getting high speed with multiple downloads?

This is an age-old problem right from the days cable/dsl broadband started. Single download links would not make full use of the available bandwidth. Which is why download managers like download acelerator plus and getright came out. these worked by splitting the file into multiple segments, which would then download in parallel making full use of the bandwidth available. Causes are sketchy but could range from throttling on your isp end to bandwidth/traffic limits on the hosting server. Try using a download manager (FDM is a good one) with your single file, just have FDM split it into multiple segments and then see if it works.

Edit: just saw that you're having the issue only with the winxp desktop and not with the win7 lappy. The above won't exactly apply then.

Winxp has a few flaws wrt. internet speed. you can try the following steps to speed it up.

I. QoS reserved bandwidth

Start - Run - type gpedit.msc

Local Computer Policy - Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - Network - QoS Packet Scheduler

Double click "limit reservable bandwidth" in the right pane.

Select the ENABLED item.

Set Bandwidth limit (%) to 0

II. Try TCP Optimizer

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

This has multiple settings, one of the most important being MTU. Try out various settings and see what fixes the problem. don't try changing multiple settings at once. also keep a track of exactly what you've changed so you can revert later if required.

Im already using Internet Download Manager

No sweat. If you have specific issues, try google, perhaps someone has already had and resolved the same issue. It's been a while so i can't really pinpoint exactly what's causing your xp internet slowdown. But there have been documented instances of it happening.

Due to some other problems, i formatted my PC and now the problem is solved.
