Win XP bootup is pretty fast on my machine. recently (last 2-3 months) the shutdown times have gone up quite a bit. After i click shutdown, it logs me off and displays the windows is shutting down message on the blue screen for almost 5~10 min before switching off. hdd is being accessed during this time

I last formatted by system in Feb 2005. both startup and shutdown are pretty fast then, but now only start up is fast.

Is this a sign of an impeding hdd failure?

have u set ur windows xp such that it should clear the "page file" everytime during shutdown ??? this is a good registry tweak but then it slows down the shutdown process.

I never set any such option.. I have set the page file size to be 1.5 GB Min to 3 GB Max. HDD is 200 GB and have enough space free on the OS partition.

^^^ Both Mohit and archish can be right... check out their suggestions. If you do a "HELP and Support" search in XP for "pagefile" you will get some info on what mohit mentioned.

When I found that XP was taking long to shut down I went crazy trying to find the cause..... after a lot of search I found by mistake I had set XP to play a tune before shutting down - and I never had my speakers switched on during the shutdown time so I never heard the tune :D

Try the command "shutdown -s -f 0" from cmd, and tell me what happens. Bet it shuts down faster than you can blink.

I use a similar command to shutdown my computer - I do it via an icon for the shutdown program. I have a "-t" in front of the 0.
Here are the options for shutdown...

Usage: shutdown [-i | -l | -s | -r | -a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "c
omment"] [-d up:xx:yy]

No args Display this message (same as -?)
-i Display GUI interface, must be the first option
-l Log off (cannot be used with -m option)
-s Shutdown the computer
-r Shutdown and restart the computer
-a Abort a system shutdown
-m \\computername Remote computer to shutdown/restart/abort
-t xx Set timeout for shutdown to xx seconds
-c "comment" Shutdown comment (maximum of 127 characters)
-f Forces running applications to close without war
ning
-d [p]:xx:yy The reason code for the shutdown
u is the user code
p is a planned shutdown code
xx is the major reason code (positive integer le
ss than 256)
yy is the minor reason code (positive integer le
ss than 65536)
