Hello!

I got a new Segate 120GB SATA hdd from richie street today for 2.5k

Come home.. connect it..... and it goes up in smoke..
so i called up the shop.. and he says sorry sir... the warrenty doesn't cover smoke and all...
what am i supposed to do now?!??

u fried the non working hard disc which he gave you (must b some other customer return) or the working hard disc.. r u sure u connected the power supplies properly? if not then ur dealer fooled you i guess. if i was at ur place i whould have gone without calling him at the dealers shope. the mistake you did is that u called. anyways hope u get replacement. immidiately contact service centres and try for RMA if dealer doesnt respond. hope 4 the best

thats real sad man, but just register at seagate, do an RMA from the website directly. Dont involve the dealer. It might work.

Other wise if you put the smoke back in it may work. Sorry I am a little bit under the vodka! LOL

'm pretty sure I connected it the correct way.. cause I unpluged my old hdd(SEGATE) and plugged this in instead...

yea.. I realized it the min i told him:(

anyway.. he told me to come tmrw.. and that he would see what he could do...

My advice ... dont go to that dealer, find out your nearest Seagate warranty center, and dont say a word about the smoke when you give the hard drive for warranty, say that it ran fine for a few hours then stopped showing the partition s in windows, also they might ask you if it was being used as an external drive.. just say no.. it was an internal backup. and yeah, make sure you carry your bill along.

umm... warrenty... Hmm... all i got is a the dude's Sign on a visiting card.. and the packed the Drive came with...

He said that the system was off(Sunday...) :((

shucks.. .so I have been had big time huh??

thanks... i just like gotto go to theoffice.. ans give them the drive an they will replace/repair it?? sounds neat:) lets hope it works:D

They will give you a new 120GB drive. It could either be a brand new drive or a repaired drive. In both cases, it will work for sure.

Man, seems like you've declared a vendetta against me. :@

They do ask for the bill if in case they doubt the drive. With all the parallel imports happening these days, its becoming a practice. However if you just play innocent then they mostly dont even check the drive. Its not like WD which gives you have home pickup warranty.

^^ In Mumbai, you have these Seagate Vans doing the rounds too. BTW Seagate and Samsung both have amazing after sales service, WD I cant vouch for...

afaik they just check the serial number on the warranty validation page, chk for physical damage (esp. on the molex/sata power connector and drive pcb) and accept the drive. if the hdd is a parallel import or one removed from a branded machine its not covered under seagate warranty, and thats reflected on the website after u enter the serial number.they dont give a squat abt the bill

Just check your drive's warranty status by entering the Serial no and Part no on their page.

Warranty Validation

Enter country as india and enter the Part no printed on the sticker. Entering model no won't work.

I've RMA'ed tonnes of seagate drives for me and friends but never ever did they ask for a bill :P

Code:
 	 In Warranty

Expiration 22-Jun-2011 Expiration 22-Jun-2011 Exchange

Please contact Esys Distribution. Alternatively you may request RMA directly to Seagate by clicking the "Create RMA" button.

hmm.. now.. to find the chennai office...

Incedently, I used to sit in Nehru Place not long ago. and the warranty center was on the sixth floor of the same building that I was in, every now and then when you visited their center you would find a customer brawling after losing the bill and the warranty guy inevitably asking for it.

Ive replaced about 60 odd HDDs for my customers including my own 300 GB they only asked me or bill once. Different experience maybe.
