My HP dvd1260 died on day before yesterday, when I went on to write something the DVD comes out saying please insert a blank device or something. It ran for over 2 years, for it's cheap price it's okay. But what should I buy now? Should I buy another cheapo or an expensive one? What's the price of Light Scribe writers nowadays? I had one Lite On back in 06, it was over 5K that time, have they fallen much since then?
Thanks in advance.

in b'lore here only LG is available... i bought a week back. when i inquired about sony and all, the guy told it can't read pirated dvd's and only option is LG, even samsung/Liteon/HP are not available!!

I think , now a days. ..you can not a buy a dvd rw....because now a days , dvd time is gone...so , i think you can buy a external hard disk of your requirement like a...500 gb , 1 tb , 2 tb , 4 tb...or etc...

Or if you can decide to buy a dvd rw....then you can buy a blue-ray player...atleast it is a newer then dvd rw....;)

Ya i know...but now a days , most of people prefer first pendrive or hard drive...

And now a days , laptop is also coming without dvd rw...like a ultrabooks....

Don't buy any dvd drive . Instead invest that money buying in good usb drive and keep one usb seprate and keep the OS loaded and on that USB drive in case if your pc needs reinstallation

Hmm...okay, I too don't like to write DVD and all, but as I have a 500 GB PHDD and I moved some stuffs there some times back, and then just few weeks back when I needed them I found that I deleted them! That's what I do when I have the option to delete something! When it's on DVD then you can't do anything, and sometimes that's a positive.
Anyway, I thought about Blu Ray drives too, but they are outta my budget, they all are over 5k right? Besides the discs are also costly. So I guess I will buy a DVD RW ultimately. I was thinking to buy Sony, but that comment on that piracy thing will be a bummer! But my previous writer was Sony (non SATA), which ran totally fine, ran everything, it was working fine when I sold it with my rig some 2½ years back. Lets see...

^^ nice thought!

I bought a Samsung DVD writer few months back for less than Rs 1000. Probably it came in a bundle of 20s/50s and therefore, it didn't have any packaging on it. There was no cable either.

BTW, do you really use LightScribe functionality that much?

The comment about Sony not reading pirated discs is obviously the usual dealer BS - he just did not have a Sony drive in stock. Sony drives have disappeared from the market since their Optiarc venture wrapped up.

As much as we wish dvd writers away, but sometimes you need it particularly during os installation, ISO to pen drive conversion usually doesn't works well.

Like the latest win 7 September 2013 updated iso. You can't convert it to the pen drive through official win 7 usb tool.

Thanks Eddy for your input. As I said I didn't face that problem with mine.
Nah, I don't use Light Scribe feature, to be honest I have never used it. When I had the Lite On I was informed that I could be able to Scribe on any DVD, and I was so stupid that I believed it, lol. It was a long time ago anyway. But I will never buy a Lite On product again. I had it for around 18 months, and I had to service it 4 times, yeah you heard right, 4.

Buy LG, cheap & best, they atleast run for a year without any issues, most of them are lucky like me when its still running fine even after 2.5 years.

I second this. I've used Sony, Samsung & LG writers and among them i'd recommend LG drives anyday. My current LG Drive is serving me from last 2 yrs and still working fine.
