I promptly refurbished the phone back to it's original state (un-pwn, un-bootneuter etc.) and sent it back to Apple in the americas. Here's how my favourite consumer electronics company responded:

Wows!!!

Product received, replaced and sent back on the same day!! :D

Great Customer Service.

^^One fine day I awoke to find a bubble under the glass screen. I generally sleep with the phone next to me so I think I might have knocked the phone off the mattress in my sleep really hard and onto the floor. I don't know if the bubble caused it, but the lowest strip of the iPhone's touchscreen about 5mm in height from the base completely stopped responding to touch. It became a dead-zone. This especially sucked since the dead-zone was in the exact spot where the spacebar, backspace and shift key is located. You can only imagine my horror.

However, things are très cool now :)

Classic case of the fabulous customer support Apple is very well known for.

Where are the anti-fanbois now?

they will claim that had apple made a proper product, there wudnt be a need for RMA

After charging 10times, you end up paying shipping also..
Lol i got so much more from dell cause they shipped 2days late..so its the same with all the companies. We just dont find the time to pat the backs/ massage the ego of our favourite companies like apple fanboys do..

Thinking further, it seems an irony...Get ripped and sing songs appreciating the ripper...or maybe its gandhi'an philosophy..:P

Not sure if the fall must have caused it. From what I heard, dead strip formation is a pretty common problem on original iPhones and it happens exactly the way you described i.e. A strip of the screen loosing touch sensitivity. Apple even offered a 1:1 swap at Apple Stores in US for any iPhone which developed this problem. I even know a guy who had to buy a new iPhone after his old one developed a dead strip.

Anyways congrats on getting a brand new replacement. :ohyeah:

Here are some links about the dead strip problem

Wouldn't say that's incorrect either. Even if we ignore the dead strip problem (since the technology was not developed by Apple), The build quality of the iPhone screen is questionable. The screen is very sensitive and prone to damange quite easily if you are not very very careful. Just a while back, a colleagues iPhone screen (or rather the glass on top) cracked when it was in his pocket even though it was protected by a good quality cushioned case.

The screen still works, but the glass on top has got cracked severely and the touch sensitivity does not work properly. To make matters worse, the glass to attached to the touch screen in the first iPhone making it necessary to replace the entire screen. He asked Apple India whether they can get the screen replaced if he bears the costs, but they refused to get it done. He is somehow not comfortable with getting the screen replaced form other sources, so still using it as it is. He however got a cheap Nokia phone as backup in case the iPhone conks of completely.

LCD's and especially touch screen's are usually very easily prone to damage if not handled properly. But the iPhone screen is a bit too fragile considering that's its designed to be operated with a finger. My P910i went though a lot of rough use in the last 3.5 years, but the screen stood all that without a problem. On the contrary I have seen 3 cracked iPhones and 1 with a dead strip in the last 6~8 months.

Bad idea doing that, Anish.

It's like laying off the bouncers for the night at a swanky pub. You're gonna have truckloads lot of riff-raff coming in and quality control will go for a toss ;)
