Pardon my noobiness.

What actually is the purpose behind these each lenses?. other than bragging rights?

Do they serve any purpose?

I understand the primes..wide...telephotos... maybe 2 each of different range.

but most look the same to me.. :S

^^ Not really, but there are some noticeable difference in IQ at same focal lengths too. Appo has a huge collection of MF lenses, unfortunately I have just seen a couple of his snaps with manual lens, but trust me the ones he has taken are beautiful. The build quality of old lens is a world of difference, when you are out shooting a lot, lens may take some beating, and the last thing you want is your plastic lens cracking up. Most of the pre 1990's lens were full metal, heavy beasts :)

As I mentioned before there is a huge IQ difference between a 50mm f1.8 (5k for Canon), and 50mm f1.4(24k for Canon). The latter is much sharper wide open, and has a beautiful creamy bokeh. In addition at 200mm a 18-200 at 200mm is not that different from a P&S IQ wise, now compare this to a 70-200 f2.8 lens (different price points here too, Canon L glass is 1.4 lakhs, while Tamron is for 40k) there is a world of difference in the sharpness levels, and not too mention the f-stop advantage which translates into a nice bokeh as well as shutter speed advantage.

Like some guy who always says to me, its better to save up for a good lens then buying cheaper ones.

Oh, and there is the whole beautiful world of film cameras, and 50 year old German lens :)

This guy who I know through weekend shooting has a 50 year old Hasselblad medium format film camera (medium format would roughly translate to 110 mega-pixels in digital parlance). I always thought what was a big deal on Hasselblad, and film SLR's but have a look at his photo-stream with square-composition images to get a general idea of pre-Carl Zeiss era of German made lenses:

Hmm.. makes sense a bit. And old lenses are metal?. woow.

About IQ. I agree to what u say. But for a average/amateur photobug whats that much IQ translate to? I dunno if any of u guys are professional in the first place.so...

Whats bokeh?

Will checkout the flickr stream once home... :)

Ouch, that statement would hurt the hobbyist. Its like saying why play games at full HD rather use a low end video card and play at 1024*xxx resolution :) none of the guys here are pro-gamers...

Most of the guys posting here would crave for even a minor bump in IQ..

hehehhe. Hmm. Going by that comparison, guess evolution is Full frame to Medium format ones. :) So next stop upgrade will be those 5Lac hasselbalds. :S

Does anyone have a Nikon f1.8 35mm DX format lens for sale ? A new one costs abour 12K ... was wondering if any nikon owners wanted to pop one off so i might get it cheaper.

Also, any 3rd party alternatives in the same range ?

Couldn't agree more about build quality. If you want unique nature/landscape/wildlife shots you'll have to take your equipment through rough conditions .

Hmm wonder which idiot told you that ! :P

@M-Jeri - You need to first try an old film camera or old lens before dismissing them. They were not mass produced and whatever was made had great attention to detail. :)

Have..seen..tried a FM2... seen few pics. and few developed pics. they were great, esp the colors. but no idea what the fuss is. :S

Just got 2 lenses for Nikon D90. The Tamron 17-50 F2.8 and the 50mm F1.8 .

On my wish-list is a 70-300 VR + a Sigma 10-20 or Tokina 11-16 .

Lenses? Not that many, and I currently only use the 50mm f/1.4 USM on my 550D. That's my walkaround lens.

Apart from that, the 50mm 1.8 II and the 18-55 have now been given away to friends. After getting a good look at the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, i'll probably pick that next, unless I save up a bit more and get the 17-40 f/4.0L. Ah, decisions decisions!!

There are a few on sale at jjmehta. IQ wise at f4.0 not much of a difference between the tammy and L glass, but yep L glass build quality is leagues ahead...

^^ The main difference between the two lenses is that the 17-40mm L lens is a FF lens and becomes an UWA lens on a FF body. :)

IQ wise you will hardly find any difference.

Yup, that would be a waste on a cropped body. And the build quality doesn't really matter when the body cant match it.

I should have had an UWA by now but my trip to hk got postponed. :bomb:

it's sitting with my sis in hk though. She's coming anytime next week, can't wait.
